THE AGAHOZO-SHALOM YOUTH VILLAGE (ASYV) was founded in response to the orphan crisis that resulted from the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Our model was inspired by youth villages created to care for kids orphaned by the Holocaust—and a very simple, but powerful, idea:
If you provide vulnerable youth with healing, education, and love, they will be able to build lives of dignity and contribute to a better world.
Since opening in 2008, the Village has transformed the lives of more than 2,000 young people.

The Moment
In 2021, ASYV launched a teacher training program called the Educational Resilience Program (ERP)—our first initiative with national reach.
By the end of 2024, the ERP had helped over 120,000 Rwandan students access critical-thinking education, digital skills, and life skills, such as mental health support and a comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education.
“In my class, there was a learner who used to perform poorly, but after the training at ASYV, I tried to be closer to her. I identified her problem. I offered her guidance and counseling. Now, she is emotionally stable, and her performance is increasing.”
— Tuyisenge Jackson, a teacher of mathematics at G.S. Matimba

The Moment
In 2022, we began a new partnership with faculty and students at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine that will enable us to enter a transformative new moment.
“We were given a chance to stand up and speak our truth after previously being seen as living proof of failure. We were given value and told that we were worthy regardless of the vulnerabilities that used to define us. We were given the opportunity to restore the rhythm of our life.”

Within five years, we will begin offering organizations from around the world trainings in how to use our holistic model to heal young people recovering from societal trauma.
