2. How to create Tours

9 of 55

How do I create Tours* on komoot?

Three different options

  1. Recreate the Tour in the komoot Route planner (i.e. on the basis of map material or route descriptions)
  2. By uploading a GPX-track (GPX, FIT, TCX)
    1. By converting a KML-tracks to a GPX track
  3. By creating a copy of an already existing komoot Tour

Goal: Add your routes to your profile

* we refer to a Tour as the finished komoot product -> your route displayed in komoot complete with Highlights and a description

10 of 55

Basic knowledge: Highlights

Examples:

  • Mountain huts, country pubs or cafes, picnic areas
  • Viewpoints, summits
  • Lakes, gorges, waterfalls
  • MTB-trails, gravel sections, passes, Via ferrata
  • Cable cars
  • Archaeological or historic sites (Castles, ruins & churches)

Please note: Highlights should be relevant for outdoor activity and the whole community (e.g inner city shops, gastronomy, tourist sites etc. are not suitable as komoot Highlights and neither are temporary occurrences (‘Squirrel on tree’, ‘Floods’) or personal highlights (‘My parents’ place’).

If the Collection needs ‘special’ Highlights like a checkpoint please speak to your komoot contact first.

Komoot Highlights are recommendations of certain spots or section by our users. These can be created as part of having completed a Tour. They then occur as red dots with a white, corresponding sport type icon on the komoot map. When creating a new route using the route planner, these can be added to your Tour.

11 of 55

Basic knowledge: Planned & completed Tours

Completed Tour:

= when using the komoot App (this includes any device integration) to track an activity (your hike/ride/run). Once your Tour is saved or uploaded, you can add photos, comments, recommend any existing Highlights you may have passed (or create new ones). The actual time in motion will be shown. Note: These Tours can’t directly be used for navigation.

Planned Tour

= when using the komoot Route planner in the App or on the website to plan or display a future Tour. Planned Tours can be used in the komoot App (or using a compatible GPS device) to navigate on your hike/ride/run. For planned Tours there will be an estimate for the Tour difficulty/time in motion.

We strongly recommend using planned Tours for where navigation is key (e.g. official event route). Completed Tours, on the other hand, can be great for social interactions/showing the flair/success of a past event.

komoot-Tours are either „completed” (recorded Tour) or „planned” (navigable Tour)

3. Adding photos

28 of 55

How do I add photos to my Tours?

Three different options:

  • Adding existing Highlights that already have high quality photos
  • Uploading new photos to existing Highlights (images should focus on the subject of the Highlight and should avoid selfies or close-ups of people, landscape format works better)
  • Creating new Highlights

When it comes to completed Tours, you can add images directly to the Tour (without the need to incorporate them into a Highlight) and these can of course also be more personal/situational to fully tell your story!

Goal: Adding photos to your Tours

Attention: You can only add photos to your Planned Tours by adding komoot Highlights in the Route planner. After adding the Highlights and saving, the photos in the Highlights will be shown on the Tour detail page. Please note, Highlights are a dynamic feature so the images shown or tips displayed at the top may change over time, as the community adds and rates (new) content..[see next slide]

29 of 55

Basic knowledge: Rank photos

To change the order, you must first click on the Highlight in the route planner and then on ‘More Details’ (below).

On the details page you can now click on the photos and rate them by clicking the thumbs up or down icon. The highest rated photos will be displayed on the first positions.

IMPORTANT: For popular Highlights a single vote usually isn’t enough to change the current order of the pictures.

IMPORTANT: To rate photos yourself, you must first upload at least two recorded Tours and within those, create at least one Highlight or recommend an existing one. This will unlock the voting function.

The order of the photos that are added to a Highlight is determined by the ratings of other users.

30 of 55

Basic knowledge: Photo Copyrights

Photos that you upload to a Highlight will be linked to your profile name & profile logo. According to the komoot terms of use this is equivalent to your copyright.

1. Adding existing Highlights with high quality photos

1. Adding Highlights that look good already

The Highlights along your route have already got nice photos and you just want to add them to your Tours.

Steps:

  • Open existing Tour in komoot
  • Click Edit
  • Select and add Highlights by clicking Include on Route in the Route planner
  • Save

Important: Please check the routing in detail when using segment highlights. Make sure that there are no other Highlights or waypoints on the entire section of the segment Highlight as this may cause routing errors. Equally consider if the segments are directional (e.g. one way traffic or trail). Check this video for an example.

  • Click on Edit Tour on the Tour page
  • Click on Highlights at the top and then on Create New Highlight at the bottom

  • Click Done
  • Highlight can now be added to planned Tours (or to completed Tours, as long as the activity type corresponds to the Highlight sport type)

*please speak to your komoot contact/Community Manager if you have very specific Highlight requirements. Highlights should usually work for the entire community in the selected sport and be a permanent feature. Therefore we try not to create Highlights that only to work in the context of an event..

4. Tour Characteristics

45 of 55

What are Tour Characteristics?

Komoot is a route planner first and foremost

To supply our users with reliable data for their route planning, the komoot Route planner shows the following details:

  • estimated difficulty level
  • estimated Time in Motion
  • distance
  • ascent and descent
  • surfaces and waytypes

46 of 55

How does the route planner calculate these stats?

  1. Level of difficultyCalculated on the basis of the length, the duration, the elevation difference and the surface/waytype.
  2. DurationCalculated on the basis of the distance and the elevation difference
  3. DistanceCalculated from the data of Openstreet Maps (basis for komoot maps)
  4. Elevation differenceCalculated from NASA data (basis for komoot elevation data)
  5. Analysis of the surface/waytypeBased on the data stored in Openstreet Maps for each route section

5. Creating a Collection

48 of 55

At a glance

Key points for an amazing feed-ready Collection (before we get to the detail..)

  • Choose a title that is interesting/fun yet descriptive
  • Choose a header image that is representative of the event/project
    • E.g the community out having fun or a beautiful landscape shot
    • Avoid using a logo or event poster as part of the header image
    • Panoramic widescreen photos (16:9) work best
  • Utilise the intro to really share the spirit of the event/ project as well as important key facts/dates
    • Please limit any external links to the essential (e.g. signup link)
  • Don’t put multiple languages into the intro
    • Chat to your komoot contact on how to tackle this if needed..

49 of 55

Basic knowledge: Collections

Komoot Collections are inspirational trip guides or reports that let you bundle Tours into different topics. These Collections show in the user’s profile and can be shared via a link.

50 of 55

How do I create a Collection?

Goal: Create a komoot Collection to organise your Tours

Each komoot Premium user can create Personal Collections to organise or showcase different Tours.

For a komoot event Collection you need the following things:

  • At least one Tour or Highlight
  • A suitable title
  • An intro text
  • An inspiring header image

You aren’t a Premium user yet? Talk to the komoot contact/Community Manager.

Be aware that anything over 24 Tours/Highlights will get truncated in the initial Collection page/map view on desktop but will load fully after clicking either ‘load more’ or scrolling to the bottom of the page. If you’re looking to add a large amount of Tours/Highlights please discuss the best format solution with your komoot contact.

51 of 55

How do I create a Collection?

What to include in the intro text

The intro text is shown at the top of your Collection and it is your chance to pitch your Collection or Event to others.

If unsure, speak to your komoot contact about what exactly to include in the intro for your specific case but the basics are as follows:

  • Describe the spirit of the project/ event and why people should be excited to enter or ride the routes (or to explore the region/included Tours)
  • Let people know that you’re talking about: e.g. an event and give key facts, dates and a clear call-to-action

52 of 55

53 of 55

Expert’s knowledge: Pick the best header image

The header image has an aspect ratio of 4:3 in the komoot Smartphone App and an aspect ratio of 1:3.4 in the web browser.

As you can only upload one photo for both uses, please make sure that important image content is placed in the middle of the photo. Panoramic widescreen photos (16:9) work best in most cases.

  • Make sure, that the horizon is placed below the middle of the photo
  • Make sure neither people nor summits reach the upper third of the image – otherwise they might get „cut off” in the web.
  • Do not use images with logos or text as this won’t look good in mobile view (or where Collections are displayed in your profile) where the title text appears on top of the image.

For best image quality the photo should have 3.000 to 4.000 pixels in width.

Please use a JPG file in RGB color mode.

54 of 55

Best Practice

Example: The Atlas Mountain Race

  • An inspiring landscape header image
  • A sharp and descriptive title
  • A nice intro, that gets across thespirit and you excited about the routes
  • Only 1 relevant link
  • Tours with descriptions or highlights, including all information a rider should have before starting the adventure.
