High Level Background Information about Upcoming Districting Study

  • Under development and will be finalized in July for the Board meeting

  • With over 750 students, Baker-Butler Elementary is the second largest elementary school in the division and is currently experiencing overcrowding

  • In response to this capacity issue and the forecast of additional development on the 29N corridor, a new school is planned for the northern feeder pattern

  • The school is not scheduled to open for the 2029/30 school year, so a more immediate solution is needed and boundary changes need to be studied.

High Level Background Information about Upcoming Districting Study

  • ACPS utilizes a citizen based committee to study and make recommendation for boundary changes. Redistricting Advisory Committees are governed by School Board Policy FB: Facilities Planning (Page 6)

  • The scope of the study is to create a two phased approach to creating new boundaries in the northern feeder pattern

  • The study should produce a recommendation that will address current over enrollment and under enrollment issues and a preliminary recommendation for a boundary for the new elementary school

  • While providing relief to Baker-Butler will be the primary objective as their over enrollment is significant , a comprehensive approach to the feeder patterns as a whole will allow us to study options for Woodbrook’s more moderate capacity issues and Stony Point’s under enrollment issues.

Current thinking on which Schools will be Included in the Study

  • To ensure it is a comprehensive approach all northern feeder pattern elementary schools will be included (Baker-Butler, Hollymead Elementary, Broadus Wood, Stony Point, Agnor-Hurt, Woodbrook , and Greer )

  • Since it is a potential solution for Stony Point, Stone Robinson Elementary will be included

  • Boundary changes may impact middle school feeder patterns, so Lakeside Middle, Journey Middle, and Burley Middle will be included

Next Steps and How Families can be involved?

  • Staff will present proposed scope of the study and composition of the committee to the School Board in July. The School Board will vote on the scope at their business meeting in August. Afterwards, we will advertise and receive applications for representatives to serve on the committee.

  • The committee will meet during the Fall of 2023. During that time there will be public meetings and surveys for everyone to give feedback.

  • The committee will make a recommendation to the Superintendent who will in turn make a recommendation to the School Board. The School Board will hold a public hearing and vote on the recommendation in February (tentative date).

  • New boundaries would go into effect for the 2024/25 school year.
