Aritz Adarrean - Katalin. (The Branch of the Oak Tree – Katalin) Walton,

Julen ezKuEzkurraEzkurraEzkurra

Aritz adarrean - Katalin is a pairing of two popular songs from Basque folklore. Aritz adarrean is a Christmas lullaby set to a tune from the province of Gipuzkoa, connecting the joy of the birth of Christ with nature’s celebration of the event. Katalin is a traditional dance called a biribilketa, which translates to “made in a circle.”  For this lively and festive dance, revelers form chains of connected circles, filling the streets with joy and celebration. At first, the pairing of these two selections may seem unusual, but it is common to commemorate an important event with great celebration and the elation of dancing together. This piece was significant enough in the composer´s body of work that it was performed at his memorial concert on the one-year anniversary of his death.

  • This isiZulu song is a reimagining of the popular traditional Tshwane church song Ke na le modisa, meaning "God of Strength." The opening is a slow and symbolic prayer, asking God for strength to stand against injustice and wrongdoing. It is followed by the promise that we, the people, will not rest even in death, fighting for what we truly believe in, and that the power of daily prayer will grant us the strength to suoceed.
