Social Scouts

Problem Statement

  • Imagine the pandemic happened in your most pivotal developmental years. As we have been forced to self-quarantine, the issue of isolation has affected millions worldwide. For current girl scouts or hopefuls, this is supposed to be a time to develop important skills related to leadership, communication, team-building, and entrepreneurship
  • As a Girl Scout Leader I know my troop has missed meetings, outdoor activities and earning badges all year
  • Goal: Come up with a solution for Girl Scouts to be able to safely interact with each other while social-distancing through an interactive scavenger hunt mobile application

Solution

Based off our initial problem with the Girl Scouts, we developed Social Scouts. Social Scouts is an app that allows children to participate in various activities together in a safe and exciting way.

Details

Social Scout will contain various activities where children can create or play various challenges. These activities will utilize the following technologies through 5G.

  • AR
  • Geofencing
  • Precise Location

Proposed Functionality

  • Earning Geocaching Badge
  • 5G low latency would allow the app to stream live.
  • AR would provide a vivid and realistic experience stream to keep the troop fully engaged.

Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world. Wikipedia

Proposed Functionality

  • Reconnect with Our Community
  • Would allow our seniors to experience a girl scout reading to them using the app.
  • The app would elevate a simple bingo over zoom into a more immersive one for both, senior and girl scouts bringing smiles to all.
  • Potential Tech Stack: Auth0, Azure, Mapbox APIs, Python, PostgreSQL, WebRTC, JavaScript

Twice a month we visited our local senior home. We read books to them and played bingo.

User Research

  • Due to our limited time, we were not able to complete extensive user research
  • We developed a persona from the problem statement, our prior knowledge and made some assumptions.

Constraints

  • We did not have a developer on our team and were not able to go beyond our prototype.
  • Our time was limited, but we were able to concluded together our problem and solution
  • User research was not conducted due to time constraints

Lessons Learned

  • Team Work makes the dream work.
  • Collaborating with each others ideas ultimately lead to the beginning of the solution.
  • Build on each others strengths

Where We Go From Here

  • We can open the app to be customizable to specific communities and non-profit organizations
  • Complete user testing of prototype
  • Conduct user research to challenge assumptions and improve overall user experience
  • Developer needed to collaborate with us and build out app.
