GROUP 1: EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

  • What does “equivalent” mean?

  • Explain how to reduce the fraction: 18/24

  • Shade the boxes to show that 2/3 = 4/6

3

equivalent is just a fancy way to say equal

You reduce by 4 you divide 4 is the GCF ( greatest common factor) of 18 and 24 is 4 do you divide by 4 and and that is how you get 3/4

GROUP 2: MIXED NUMBERS & IMPROPER FRACTIONS

  • Shade the boxes to represent a mixed number. Then write it as an improper fraction.

  • Explain how you would convert 17/3 to a mixed number.

  • Explain how you would convert 4 ⅕ to an improper fraction.

How much times can three go into 17 which is 5 and then you put whatever is left which is ⅔ and the total answer is 5 2/3

First you 4x5 and you get 20 they you + 1 and = 21 then you keep the denominator which is 5 and you get 21/5

1 3/5= 8/5

Group 3: ADDING & SUBTRACTING

FRACTIONS

  • In order to add two fractions, they must have a common

  • Shade the shapes to show that ¾ + 5/12 is NOT = 8/16

5

  • Explain how you would add: ⅖ + 1/15

COMMON DENOMINATOR

WE SEE IF THE 5 UNDER THE 2 CAN CHANGE IT TO A 15 AND THEN WE MULTIPLY THE NUMBER THAT MULTIPLY 5 IS 3 SO IT BECOMES A 6 AND THE 1 STAYS THE SAME BECAUSE IT ALREADY HAS A 15 AND THEN WE JUST ADD A GET 7/15 OR YOU CAN REDUCE

GROUP 4: MULTIPLYING & DIVIDING FRACTIONS

6

  • Explain in words how to multiply two fractions together.

  • What process do we always use to divide two fractions? Provide an example.

  • Shade the boxes to show that ½ of ¼ = ⅛

You multiply the numerators together and you multiply the denominators together

KCF (keep change flip)
