National Level

“The civic mission of social studies demands the inclusion of all students—addressing cultural, linguistic, and learning diversity that includes similarities and differences based on race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, exceptional learning needs, and other educationally and personally significant characteristics of learners. Diversity among learners embodies the democratic goal of embracing pluralism to make social studies classrooms laboratories of democracy.”

Curriculum Standards

Because of student mobility, Texas has adopted curriculum standards that are to be used in all the state's public schools. The current standards, which outline what students are to learn in each course or grade, are called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The standards are adopted by the State Board of Education, after extensive input from educators and other stakeholders.

Proclamations

The SBOE uses a proclamation to call for new instructional materials or new information about currently adopted instructional materials. The proclamation lists the subject areas scheduled for review. It contains a schedule of adoption procedures, requirements of publisher participation, links to the required TEKS and English Language Proficiency (ELPS), and instructions for providing electronic files for braille and large-print materials. Proclamations are named for the year the materials go into the classroom.

LISD Statement on Racism

In Leander ISD, we unequivocally condemn racism, discrimination, and exclusion of all kinds. Our hearts are broken. The killing of George Floyd and others has profoundly impacted our nation and reminded us we live in a world where racism undeniably exists. We acknowledge that racism exists in Leander ISD. Our students matter, each and every one of them. We know it is time for action. As we cope with uncertainty, we must partner with our community to create equitable and inclusive environments for our entire population. We create a better future for our students when we stand against racism and value the diverse culture of our community. Hope is not enough. As Leander ISD, we demand equity.
