Quality Over Quantity

5 of 25

Agenda

  • Forward: Quality over Quantity
  • Final Report
  • Presentation

6 of 25

Introduction

  • Between 250-300 words
    • Avoid spelling mistakes, typos, etc.
  • Introduce the dataset:
    • Who collected data? Why? Where was it collected?
    • What do the rows of each table represent?
    • Describe the variables most relevant to your work.
  • Tips:
    • Write in Google Docs
    • Read aloud before submitting

7 of 25

Questions

  • Between 150-200 words long: check writing quality.
  • Explain the overarching theme of your research report
  • State your hypothesis testing question
    • What is the null hypothesis?
    • The alternative?
  • State your prediction testing question
  • How do these questions relate to the theme of your report?

8 of 25

Exploration

Only 2 plots and 2 tables:

  • Quantitative plot
  • Qualitative plot
  • Table made with aggregation function
    • pivot
    • group
  • Table made as a result of join:
    • Can still use pivot and group
  • Provide a brief explanation of each plot and table.

Be Honest!

13 of 25

Hypothesis Testing Question

  • State the hypothesis test being performed
    • Restate the null
    • (Re)state the alternative
    • Decide on a significance level
    • Explain your choice of test
  • Implement the test.
  • Interpret your results
    • Is the data consistent with the null? Why?

14 of 25

Prediction Question

  • Restate your prediction question.
    • What method will you use? Why?
  • Implement your predictive model.
  • Evaluate your model fit, and, if possible, performance.
    • Use appropriate diagnostic tools and measurements
    • If using linear regression, can plot residuals here.
  • Interpret your results:
    • Does your model fit the data well
    • Can you use it to predict the outcome of new data points?

Note on Reproducibility

The hypothesis testing and prediction sections’ results rely on random permutations and/or simulations:

  • Different results every time we run the notebook
  • Hard to interpret findings if the numeric values are always changing

Solution: Use np.random.seed(seed), where seed is some integer.

Conclusion

  • Briefly restate the results of your hypothesis test and prediction procedures:
    • Relate them to overarching theme
    • Two to four sentences

17 of 25

Conclusion (Cont.)

  • State at least one potential limitation of your data or analyses:
    • Potential sources of bias in your data?
    • Are your HT/prediction methods appropriate?
    • If you could do it again, what would you change?
    • One to three sentences.

Agenda

  • Forward: Quality over Quantity
  • Final Report
  • Presentation

19 of 25

Format

  • Summarize your report in a 5 minute video:
    • Present introduction, questions, exploration, hypothesis testing, prediction, and conclusion sections
    • Start early, recording can take a while
    • Quality over quantity: Don’t go over 5 minutes!
  • Include link to video at the end of final report:
    • Upload to Youtube or other service
    • Upload early, it can take a while!

20 of 25

Format (Cont.)

  • Our recommendation: film a slide-deck presentation using Zoom.
    • Work on slides with partner using Google Slides.
    • Check out this guide for recording a zoom session
  • Both partners must be involved in filming and presenting
