About the Race

Entering its 50th year, the Schooner Creek Pacific Northwest Offshore race is one of the pre-eminent races in the Pacific NW, also known and followed through the world of sailing.

The Corinthian Yacht Club of Portland celebrated the first race in 1976, traveling down the coast from the Columbia River bar to Newport, Oregon. In 1980, the finish line moved to Victoria, BC. The 193 nautical-mile race begins at the mouth of the Columbia River, proceeding up the Washington coastline before entering the Strait of Juan de Fuca before concluding at the southeastern corner of Vancouver Island near Victoria Harbor. It is the longest continuous ocean race in the Pacific NW.

In 2020 the starting city was to be moved from Astoria, OR to Ilwaco, WA and the race was renamed from the “Oregon Offshore” to the “Pacific NW Offshore”. A name more fitting of the regional effort and course. Ilwaco provided many new benefits to the race, including the ability to moor all boats together in one deep-draft marina, the excitement and strong support of a growing tourist destination along the Long Beach Peninsula, and a shortened commute to the start line for the competitors. Unfortunately, the 2020 race be canceled due to Covid. Creativity in 2021 and 2022 saw us race to a new finish destination of Port Angeles, WA with incredible support from Port Angeles Yacht Club and local community.

In 2023 through 2025 the finish was back in Victoria, BC as we will be in 2026 with the hospitality and support of the Greater Victoria Harbor Association (GVHA) and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club (RVYC). Some exciting changes in 2024 carrying forward to 2025 include the start date of the race being moved a week closer to the Swiftsure International Yacht Race (May 15th to be exact), moving to the popular and growing ORC rating system, and virtual starting and finish lines. We are also excited to announce Portland Yacht Club as a “Presenting Sponsor” starting in 2026.

About the Racers

Boats typically hail from Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, and have ranged from the famous Wylie 70 Rage to the small but stout Dana 24. Many of the competitors remain in Victoria for the Swiftsure International Yacht Race, which follows a week later. The race is also a qualifying event for the Vic-Maui race to Hawaii, as well as Pacific Cup and TransPac.

The Pacific NW Offshore race has seen increased interest the last few years, growing to upwards of 30 registered boats. We believe longer-term the move to Ilwaco will increase interest even further as marina depth has been an issue in Astoria for larger and even medium size boats. We have already heard interest from some bigger competitive race boats in the Pacific NW. This year it looks like we will have between 25-30 boats, with each boat typically has a crew of 4-8, so we are planning for around 150-250 competitors (plus family and friends in Ilwaco and Victoria). The race is an around-the-clock endurance competition over 2-4 days, with boats starting Thursday morning and finishing by Sunday morning.

Due to continued interest and requests, we are excited to invite Multihulls to participate again this year, and look forward to seeing a handful of them joining us on the start line!

Sponsorship Opportunity

The Pacific NW Offshore offers a unique and exciting opportunity to get your company’s brand and/or products in front of a large and energetic audience of outdoor enthusiasts.

The race’s website and social media accounts are regularly updated. A substantial draw is our live race tracker, where fans of ocean sailboat racing and the friends and family of the competitors can watch the race play out live. Last year’s race was the tenth with live tracker coverage, with the same tracker company used for some of the most prestigious races in the world (YB Tracking). On social media we have 1.6k direct followers on Facebook with a reach of over 18k so far in ’24, and a growing Instagram audience.

The website also tracks entrants in the lead-up to the race, and promotes four supporting events for competitors and interested observers. Finally, it serves as the central hub for information for competitors and all associated online resources are frequently checked for new updates in the weeks surrounding the race.

There are a number of events that support the race as well, with each event drawing 75-200 attendees. In mid-late-April, the Pacific NW Offshore Kick-Off Party in Portland. The night before the race, is the Skippers’ Meeting and pre-race gathering with all competitors and many ground support crew present. Finally, the awards ceremony is hosted in Victoria Sunday after the race at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. We also hold multiple introduction and readiness sessions leading up to the race. Sponsors are highlighted in all of these events.
