The name of the Singapore Chinatown

Story of Niu Che Shui 牛车水

牛车水大致上为北到新加坡河，西至新桥路（New Bridge Rd.）；南至"麦斯威尔"路（Maxwell Rd.）和克塔艾尔路（Kreta Ayer Rd.），东到塞西尔街（Cecil St.）。

至于牛车水名字的典故，坊间也有不止一种的说法。有一种说法是：在一个世纪以前，河水暴涨，淹没了这附近的大街小巷， 于是居民们用牛车把水盘了拉走，所以就有人称这个区域为“牛车水”。

还有一个说法是：当年这一带的居民曾经以牛车载水来清洗街道，因此就将这地方称为牛车水。还有人说，当年的新加坡马来人常用牛车将来自安祥山的井水载来， 因此这个地方被称为“牛车水”。
