The spiral shapes of sunflowers follow a Fibonacci sequence.

That's where you add the two preceding numbers in the sequence to give you the next one. So it starts 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc. The Fibonacci sequence shows up in nature quite a lot.

Monomial Mix up

  1. Randomly hand out 1 card to each person (groups of 5: 1 person stand out and supervise/ be the spokesperson)-- now you all form a polynomial!
  2. Re-arrange yourselves so that your polynomial is in standard form
  3. Decide as a group:
    • DEGREE
    • LEADING COEFFICIENT
    • CONSTANT
  4. Once you are ready, whole group sit down and Ms. Porter will come over to hear your degree, leading coefficient and constant
  5. Once all teams have completed the round
    • Mix up your cards
    • Pass them one group to your left
    • Groups of 5 rotate supervisor
