I made a video during distance learning. It’s a little old, but if you’d like to watch it, visit this link!

  • After high school, I joined the US Navy. I served for 5 years, working with electronics and communications on board the USS Wyoming.

  • Because of the Navy, I was able to afford to go to college. I graduated with honors in 2010 from Shippensburg University.
  • In 2019, I also earned my Master’s Degree from Ship in Educational Leadership with a PK-12 Principal certification.

  • My wife and I have been married for 16 years and together for 20. She teaches Algebra I and AP Calc here at CASHS. She is pure sunshine. We love teaching.

8 of 23

  • I have two sons Caleb and Ian. Caleb is 10, loves roller coasters, reading with me, and is one of the bravest people I know. Ian is 6, loves swings, reading with me, and hugging people.

  • I love how much they love each other, and I’ve learned the most about how to be a good teacher from them.

10 of 23

  • I love to read and I love to write.

  • I’m also a huge nerd. I love anything related to Marvel, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. And I’m just unashamedly nerdy about all things education.

Students should have a plan for storing current work beyond shoving copies into their agenda.

Students are required to keep a binder OR a folder for this class. These will store current notes, writings, classwork, handouts, and often printed copies of our reading.

Students may choose to do their work digitally as well. Work will be saved in their Google Drive.

I do not conduct a marking period notebook check, but I expect students to be able to find any workthat we’ve done. (We clean out all nonessentialitems every few weeks).

  • Pen/Pencil - Something to write with every day
  • Headphones (optional but encouraged) – these will help during days where they might be viewing videos independently

The following will be provided (but students may purchase personal supplies) for use:

  • Highlighters
  • Post-It Notes
  • Loose-Leaf paper
  • Markers/Colored Pencils

OTHER SUPPLIES

  • I have been collecting good books for years to help hook students into learning. If they don’t like reading, it just means they haven’t found the right book!
  • If you’d like to contribute to our classroom library, please consider donating books you’ve loved or visit our Amazon list chosen by students: bit.ly/eladewald
  • I’ve also had many books not returned during the pandemic. If you’d like to purchase a replacement: bit.ly/dewaldreplacements

I do not assign a lot of homework.

Typically, it is given when work has been started in class, but we didn’t have the opportunity to finish. This will usually only be about 10-15 minutes.

Make sure you have a quiet place at home where you can read and write undisturbed when necessary.

I always accept late work, and students may revise work they’ve had graded, up to the last week of the marking period when final grades are calculated.

I deduct ~10% points from the assignment.

Please submit all late work to the turn-in box on my desk. It is usually graded within a week.

  • Keystones
  • The test covers Grammar, Comprehension of Reading passages in a variety of genres, and written analysis of texts (short essays called “constructed response” on the test)
  • A major goal of this course is the ability to write clearly an analysis of a text and using correctly punctuated text evidence for support.
