What is BSCO

The Bonny Slope Community Organization, or BSCO, is the parent-teacher organization at Bonny Slope Elementary School. As a parent or guardian of a child at Bonny Slope, you are automatically a member of the BSCO. With the goal of enhancing the educational experience of Bonny Slope students, the BSCO coordinates volunteer efforts, community events, educational enhancement and fundraising.

The BSCO was founded by parents as a non-profit organization when Bonny Slope Elementary opened in 2008. The BSCO has raised funds and organized volunteers to support many of the extras that enhance our school.

Funding Proposals

Track Improvement Summary

Interest in resurfacing the track has been discussed over the years at Bonny Slope.

The current goal is to find out the actual cost, and find out if it is possible to widen and resurface the track.

We have been in contact with the Beaverton School District Project Coordinator Scott Loggins and BSD Facilities Coordinator Kari McGrawth.

Next steps:

  1. BSD will hire a contractor to get a cost estimate. This estimate will cost $1,200 and needs to be approved and paid by BSCO.
  2. The current request is an estimate to:
    1. Keep two lanes, but widening the two lanes.
    2. Add a rubberized surface to the track on top of current asphalt.
    3. Consider straightening the track near the blacktop/foursquare area.
    4. Consider removing the bushes and adding a retaining wall to widen towards the property line.

Track Improvement Summary (continued)

Additional Notes:

  • We do not want to reduce the size of the field.
  • Turf field is not permitted.
  • BSD would not fund this. It would be up to the community to raise the funds for general school improvements. (Unrestricted giving)
  • Construction is approximately 4-6 weeks and could be 2 years start to finish.

Read the full proposal here.

** IF it is possible to move forward with this project, BSCO will need to fundraise significantly to complete this project.

Learning Garden

The Garden is due for some repairs and updates.

BSE is in the unique position to reimagine the space and create a dynamic learning playscape that will help children with a host of developmental and educational benefits.

The Garden program was discontinued by BSD and all improvements and maintenance are the responsibility of the Bonny Slope Community.

Learning Garden (continued)

Guest speakers on the educational benefits of the garden:

Bitsy Parks - First Grade Teacher

Deb Henley- Kindergarten teacher

There is no current estimate for cost, but BSCO is considering $40k as a benchmark.

**BSCO should be able to complete this project this year without additional fundraising.

Improvements wishlist:

  • Replace raised beds
  • Green Waste Management
  • Repair irrigation plan
  • New/improved teaching space

Dreams for the future:

  • Covered teaching area
  • Playscaping

Improvements will be completed in phases.

Gym Floor Improvements

Every student at Bonny Slope uses the gym. Currently, the gym floor is laid over concrete. BSCO is considering the request from the gym teachers to upgrade the surface to a sprung floor. Estimated cost: $80,000 - $95,000

**Additional fundraising will be required to complete this project.

Guest speaker:

Jacob Whitehead - Gym Teacher for

Pantry Provisions Pilot Program

BSE provides food to families in our school that experience food insecurity. Currently, the Pantry committee stocks backpacks full of food for students to take home to ensure they have food during the weekend/over school breaks for Thanksgiving, winter break, and spring break. For various reasons, the backpack program is not meeting the needs of our participating families.

BSCO is seeking community support to increase the Pantry budget from $5,000 to $15,000 to provide families with $100 grocery gift cards, allowing families to purchase foods that they know how to prepare, accommodate the dietary needs of their families, and retain their dignity.

Guest speakers:

Jennifer Cade - BSE Social Worker [sent talking points]

Alana Anderson - Pantry Provisions co-lead

USDA “Thrifty Food Plan” costs for comparison.

BSCO is able to fund this program through its discretionary account without additional fundraising.

Voting Information Recap

BSE Track: Community is voting whether or not to pay $1,200 to a contractor who can tell us if it is possible to widen the track.

  • BSCO has this money within the 2024-25 discretionary budget. The larger issue is whether the community wants to pursue widening the track.
  • If it is possible to widen the track, the community will be informed of the estimated cost and we will vote again as to whether to pursue completion.

Learning Garden: Community is voting on making $40k available to renovate/repair the school garden.

  • This project will likely take greater than a year to complete.
  • BSCO could allocate the full value to this project from reserve funds but that would deplete reserves.

Gym Floor: Community is voting to support the renovation of the gym floor, replacing the current surface with a sprung floor.

  • A vote “YES” means that the community supports working with BSD to embark on discovery work to determine costs and logistics of the project. The community would have to vote again as to whether to pursue completion.
  • Renovations to the gym could take years to complete.
  • BSCO will need to fundraise and save to bring this project to completion.

Pantry Pilot Program: Community is voting to increase the Pantry committee’s budget from $5,000 to $15,000 for the 2024-25 school year.

  • BSCO has this money within the 2024-25 discretionary budget
  • A “YES” vote does not mean that the budget for the Pantry committee will be raised permanently. The budget for the 2025-26 school year is set in the Spring. The community will vote to ratify that budget in May.

Community Vote

Because of the dollar values in play, the vote opens tonight and will be available to the community for an additional nine (9) days.

To prevent non-community members from voting, the form will be posted to a password protected page on the BSCO website. The password will be available on ParentSquare.

If all items are approved, it may take BSCO several years to fundraise enough money to complete the projects. Information with be forthcoming with the results of the vote.

Please go to the Zoom chat to find the link to vote.
