“Relational organizing is how we turn the relationships people already have into a powerful organizing network: building trust through personal conversations, bringing people together around a shared purpose, and creating the organizational infrastructure we need to build lasting power.”

Traditional Organizing vs. Relational Organizing

  • Who is contacted: Voters selected through voter-file data, targeting models, precincts, or call/text lists.
  • Typical methods: Door-to-door canvassing, phone banks, direct mail, mass email, peer-to-peer campaign texting, and campaign events.
  • Conversation style: Usually standardized scripts focused on identifying support, persuading, registering voters, or getting them to vote.
  • Core advantage: It gives campaigns broad, centralized coverage and lets them systematically reach targeted populations.

  • Who is contacted: People in that volunteer’s own network—friends, family, classmates, colleagues, neighbors, or community connections.
  • Typical methods: A personal text, call, conversation, social-media message, or follow-up about registration, an issue, or a voting plan.
  • Conversation style: More tailored and ongoing: volunteers can connect the campaign or issue to the person’s stated values and practical needs, then follow up over time.
  • Core advantage: It uses existing trust and social accountability, so the message can feel more credible and less like campaign marketing.

Traditional Organizing

Relational Organizing

Traditional voter contact is campaign-to-voter outreach: staff or volunteers contact people selected from voter lists. Relational organizing is supporter-to-personal-network outreach: volunteers mobilize friends, relatives, coworkers, and neighbors with whom they already have a relationship.
