FIRST, WHAT IS IT?

If you have never seen this orange stick in the grocery stores, you may be asking, what is that thing? Well, it is a Tide Stain Stick! This little stick, is an instant stain remover that is designed to eliminate all types of stains, while on the go! It is meant to be used right away on the toughest of food and drink stains, directly on the affected area.

WHAT IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT?

You may be wondering, that it is a little hard to believe that a tiny stick like this can eliminate even the toughest so-called stains. It is true! So, what is the science behind this mechanism? This stain remover uses the compound hydrogen peroxide, to remove this marks. Along with this compound, it also used surfactant, detergents, and water.

These factors, all work together to break up the individual molecules that make up a food stain, causing the stain to be eliminated and disappearing.

This process, is called oxidation. This specific combination of peroxide, surfactant, and detergent work together without the need of rinsing thoroughly.

HOW DOES THIS CONNECT TO WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED?

This connects to what we have learned, through our units in which dicussed reactions and their processes. The function of the Tide Stick, is a classic example of an oxidation reaction. As soon as the tip of the stick meets with the food stain, the reaction occurs immediately as the hydrogen peroxide and other chemicals work to dissociate the molecular compounds of the food residue.

In conclusion, science is truly everywhere, even when we may not even be thinking about it. In a lab or even ot to lunch and you spill your favorite soup on your shirt, science comes to the rescue.
