Let’s Breathe!

We’re first going to start by standing together and doing some intentional breathing to get us into the mindset of playing our horns together today.
Using a “Yaw” syllable or Oh syllable. This will get your jaw in the right position to make sure you’re not holding in the air too much.
Start by taking breaths together

In for 4, immediately out for 4

Use your hand as a guide to guide your breath in and out
Use your hand out in front of you, are you feeling fast air?

You should be feeling that everything is expanding. When we exhale the body will return back to center.
Realistic to breathing on the trombone:

Breathe in for one beat, and immediately out for 4 beats
Repeat this 4 times.

We want to make sure we’re thinking both about air intake and the outgoing air.
How much air do I need for this next passage? How much air do I have available for me to play through this phrase properly?

Tips on Teaching Breathing

Do:

Approach like a conversation - what kind of ease and relaxation do you have while breathing in casual conversations?
Ensure air passages are open - using “O” or “Oh” like mouth shapes

Don’t:

Cram into too much air into your lungs
Talk about the diaphragm!

What’s a Brass Band?

How many of you are familiar with New Orleans Brass Bands and where they came from?

What aspects are you familiar with?

We’re going to watch a Short Clip from the Film Take Me to the River New Orleans about what a Brass Band/Second Line Culture is.

Brass Bands were once something used for very special occasions and hired by social aid and pleasure clubs.
early brass band tradition were often derived from gospel hymns, which were an established part of their repertoire. Songs like “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” “Bye and Bye,” and “Gloryland” were staples in early brass band repertoire.
In the 60s, the Dejan Olympia Brass Band started to add in more contemporary tunes from artists like Fats Domino, beginning to evolve the sound into something more in line with popular music

We’re now going to listen to a New Orleans Brass Band tune to start getting ourselves in the mindset of approaching and teaching ear training to our brass students.
First, we’re going to listen to a Lil’ Rascal’s Tune called “Rascal’s got fire” or often called “We got that fire”

Play once
Who can sing the melody?

Now everyone should sing along to the melody - if you don’t know the words, that’s okay, just do ooh sounds
Now, I want you to take a little time on your horn to try to take it from the melody you just sang to your instrument

In a class setting, we might transcribe using noteflight, sheet music, or whatever method works best for the student.
I always recommend recording the part once you have it down so it’s easier to retain!

Once you have it, give me a little cue and/or help your neighbor out if they’re struggling with the part.
