Climate change

The effects of climate change are more and more evident: melting glaciers, drought, rising seas, extinction of animal species...

Deforestation, emissions of polluting gasses, the use of fossil fuels are among the main causes of this problem.

Climate change

Who else we can blame, if not ourselves?

Will we be able to

counter global warming?

The pathogen also caused the buds to fall off the branches.

We noted…

The buds, initially green, have darkened and started to drop; as well as the leaves following the alteration of the chlorophyll.

Leaves

We are observing leaves falling to ensure that the ambient temperature is balanced during the seasons so, similarly to lichens, leaves can also become environmental indicators.

How?

With the arrival of autumn, light and temperature decrease.

In this phase we can notice a clear change, the color of the leaves: green-down.

Climate change also affects the little things of everyday life.

The plants react with early flowering of the buds with subsequent fall of the leaves or alterations of the chlorophyll and of the leaf apparatus.

As temperatures rise, many viruses, bacteria and pathogens also proliferate.

We watched how leaves change color from October 14th to November 18th.

We did this using a color guide, that is a card where there are the colors that a leaf can have.

Environmental sentinels

A lichen is a symbiosis between mushroom and seaweed that grows on logs and rocks.

Seaweed produces the nourishment for the mushroom and the mushroom absorbs water and mineral salts.

  • Identify the species
  • Specify thallus color
  • Calculate relative frequency and percentage frequency
  • Take pictures and specify the plant we choose.

They are environmental bioindicators of air quality, because they absorb polluting substances in the environment.

They can help forecast the condition of the weather, say something on the air temperature, dampness and wind at the different heights, and are responsible of the rain.

Studying clouds through variations in quantity, geographic location or type effects on climate and weather conditions.
