TYPES OF COLORS

Primary

Talking Points: Let’s look at your color wheels. First, we have the primary colors, red, blue, and yellow. Combined, these colors can make any of the others. When you combine two primary colors, you get secondary colors. Blue and yellow make green, yellow and red make orange, and red and blue make violet. You can see on the color wheel that each of these secondary colors falls between the two primary colors it’s made of. Finally, we have tertiary colors. These colors are made by combining a primary color with a secondary color. Blue and green make blue-green, yellow and orange make yellow-orange and so on. The primary color is always listed first when naming a tertiary color, so in blue-green, blue is listed first because it’s the primary color. On the color wheel the tertiary colors fall between the primary and secondary color which make them. Blue-violet is between blue and violet.

PAINT MATCHING

Talking Points: Now you’re going to use what you’ve learned about primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, and tints, tones, and shades to practice matching and mixing your own paint color. On the slide, you can see two examples of what this might look like. In the first example, the color matched was from a green Colorado 4-H lanyard. The second example is an envelope with some watercolor roses. The finished page was then embellished with marker. You are going to pick out a piece of junk and glue it to a page in your journal. You can cut it into any shape you would like and I encourage you to pick something that represents a part of your identity. This might be a wrapper from a favorite food, a picture of a football jersey or album cover from a magazine, or maybe it’s just your favorite color. Once you have your piece cut out and glued to your journal page, you can start mixing colors. You’ll be given each of the primary colors, black, and white in acrylic paint. Start by identifying the color. Is it primary, secondary, tertiary? Which colors go into making that color? Do you need to add white, grey, or black to make it a tint, tone, or shade? Start by adding small amounts of color to a base. If you are trying to match a teal, you might start with blue or if it’s a really light color, you might start with white. A little goes a long way, especially with black paint, so go slowly and be careful about the amount of colors you add at once. As a final note, be sure to not get your paint too thick or it won’t dry in time to finish the next activity.
