History & VISION

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards:

  • Established in 1987
  • First class of National Board Certified Teachers were certified in 1995
  • The third version of the assessment program first certified new NBCTs in 2017.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification assessments are the only nationally recognized system for certifying accomplished teaching in the United States.

The National Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification processes were designed by teachers, for teachers.

Candidate ELIGIBILITY

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree

  • Hold a valid state licensure

  • Have three years of successful classroom teaching experience by the time you submit all 4 components.*

Classroom ELIGIBILITY

The content area of the lesson you design and the developmental level of the students with whom you work in the video recording must match those of your original certificate area.

  • At least 51% of students same age range
  • Content must be within the same scope of your original
  • Instruction must take place in a Pre-K–12 setting.
    • Students must be from a rostered class
    • You do not need to be the teacher of record
    • Class must take place during the regular school day and year
      • No extracurricular activities
      • No Summer School

Retakes

After initial attempt

  • Each candidate has two years available for retakes, if needed.

  • A candidate can retake a portfolio entry component or any one of the four parts of Component 1 regardless of score earned.

  • The higher score will be kept for calculating the total score on the assessment.

  • Candidates will be able to use an online calculator to determine how new scores would affect total scaled score.

  • 3 constructed response exercises

C2: Differentiation in Instruction

  • direct evidence of your practice from two video recordings;

Candidates are required to pay for costs initially, and will be reimbursed upon submission of a component.

Provided candidates submit the intended forms on the application, this waiver allows component fees to be waived (max $1,900).

Initial Candidate components cost $475 each ($1,900). MOC cost $495 per attempt.
