What An DBQ or Long Essay Prompt Looks Like

Evaluate the extent to which the Enlightenment caused the American Revolution

Will always ask you to “evaluate the extent” or “evaluate the significance”

This means you are being asked to argue if something played a large/small role or if something was significant/insignificant

Will always ask you to focus on causation OR change and continuity OR comparison

The main topics you are asked to discuss

HOW TO BREAKDOWN A QUESTION

PROMPT: Evaluate the extent to which the Enlightenment caused the American Revolution

STEP 1: Identify the main topics and time periods mentioned in the prompt.

  • Topics: The Enlightenment (creation of new ideas about rights and government), the American Revolution (British colonists objected to the power of the king and their lack of representation. Included documents like the Declaration of Independence)

  • Time periods: The Enlightenment took place during the 1600s and 1700s. The American Revolution began in 1775.

STEP 2: Identify which of the 3 C’s the prompt wants you to focus on (highlight one)

  1. Causation (Cause and Effect)
  2. Change and Continuity Over Time
  3. Comparison (Similarities and Differences)

STEP 3: Identify a main argument and a counter argument. List some specific evidence (specific events, developments, people, ideas) that can be used to support that argument.

  • What is your main argument?
    • The Enlightenment played a large role in causing the American REvolution
  • List specific evidence that could support the main argument
    • Enlightenment ideas such as voting, limited government, representation, social contract shown in Declaration of Independence, Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, and the phrase “No Taxation Without Representation”
  • What is your counter argument?
    • However, colonists desire to expand also played a small role in causing the Revolution
  • List specific evidence that could support the counter argument
    • Economic restrictions like mercantilism (smuggling, Navigation Acts), territorial restrictions like the Proclamation Act

Argument shows the “extent” to which Enlightenment caused REvolution

Counter argument acknowledges that there were other smaller causes
