Problem

There is traffic lights about 150 feet from this intersection. When this light is Red, the traffic backs up and blocks the intersection on Darwell Ave. Therefore, cars on Darwell can not make there turns.

Why we want to work on this?

We want to work on this because we have experienced the danger in making and completing these turns. We want the residents on Darwell Ave. to use the intersection safely to get to where they need to go.

Plan to solve problem

Our plan to solve this problem:

  • is to research the car accidents.
  • Start a petition to add a “Keep Clear” zone placed on the ground.
  • Show it to public works city officials.

Civic Action 1

Research

We researched online, asked people door to door on darwell ,and called the police station if there was any car collisions in the intersections.

Civic Action 2

Petition

Our group has made a petition to place a “Keep Clear” zone on the north side of the intersection to stop the traffic from backing up.

We got 45 signatures.

Civic Action 3

Call City Hall

We called City hall to speak with a city council member to explain out the problem and ask him how can we get our goal with the “Keep Clear” zone.

Letter to Public works

We created a letter explaining the problem and then the Asst. City Manager will ask public works to investigate the intersection.

A few months later…

My mom was blowing up my phone. I was at school and kept ignoring the call. But she kept calling me and I panicking thinking something was wrong.

I answered the phone and…

My mom told me that the city was painting the keep clear zone at the end of my block. I couldn’t believe it. I was so excited!

Report & Findings

The things we found was that we could show public works the time of day that the intersection was blocked off and how many people experience this problem also.

What Did We Learn As A Group?

As a group we learned how to create a petition and how we can create a strong argument for city hall to take action.
