What is the purpose of the accountability system?

  • Provides clear, actionable information to families, community members, and the public about district and school performance.
  • Helps DESE direct resources and assistance.
  • Allows DESE to identify districts and schools that require assistance or intervention, as well as those demonstrating success.
  • Maintains a single statewide accountability system that aligns with the Commonwealth’s priorities while meeting federal education requirements.

Single School Districts

  • Difference between district and school results are likely small
  • School Level: students enrolled/educated in the school as of October 1
  • District Level: all students enrolled in the district (including students enrolled after October 1 AND students educated in outplacement settings)
  • Accountability percentiles only calculated for the school, using school-level data

MCAS Student Growth Percentiles

  • Student Growth Percentiles (SGPs) provide a measure of the degree to which a student’s achievement has changed from the prior year(s) to the current year, in comparison to other students in the same grade who performed similarly in the past.

  • SGPs use students’ current and prior scores to assign an SGP that ranges from 1 to 99.

  • Higher numbers represent higher relative growth and lower numbers represent lower growth.
  • Average SGP for the state - 49 for English Language Arts; 50 for Math
