School Closure

“Governor Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond have announced that school campuses in California will not be able to reopen this school year. To be clear, the 2019-2020 school year has not ended. The remainder of the school year now transitions from in-person classroom instruction to instruction and support for students through distance learning options as described by California Department of Education (CDE).”

Evergreen School District is committed to delivering high-quality educational opportunities to our students through Distance Learning while school closures are in effect.

Class Schedule

All schools and teachers will be sending a schedule to indicate when to attend class(es) and when you will have a designated time for you to engage with your teacher for that specific time period. These are dedicated times for you to connect with your teacher to review content and assignments, have small group discussions, and/or interact with your classmates. Your teachers will be able to conduct class check-ins through an online meeting using Zoom, Google Hangout, Google Docs, an email exchange, or some other method the teacher has specified to demonstrate that students are engaged in the class. Students are expected to attend class check ins.

Office Hours

Office hours are a time set aside when students/parents can meet with their teachers to discuss the material being presented in class, ask questions, seek clarification, etc. Office hours can take place in multiple formats. Staff will utilize a combination of Google Meet, Zoom, phone conference and email as appropriate for their students and their communities.

9

  • Check-ins as scheduled (during assigned period)
  • Submission of work/assignments as posted by teacher
  • Responding to postings and/or emails for each period during the designated time for each period

If a student becomes ill and is unable to engage with their classes, parents/guardians are to email teachers to let them know.

33

34 of 37

Tips for Parents

  • See the Distance Learning Guide for Parents on https://sites.google.com/eesd.org/march2020/home for tips on how to use Chromebooks and Google Classroom.
  • Set routines to establish “school time” from “down time”.
  • Set expectations of other household members so that “school time” is recognized by all. Limiting distractions from others will help students focus.
  • Realize that students will need time to adjust to learning remotely and using online learning platforms. Check in with your student daily to determine how they are doing and what help they may need. Encourage them to ask questions during learning sessions and/or during teacher Office Hours.
  • The experience of Distance Learning is different from in-person learning in the physical classroom. Support your student by setting up a routine together and allowing for variation on how and when your student works.
  • Encourage your student to reach out to friends by phone or online so they have opportunities to stay connected.
