Choosing the right resource for LIs

Tip: Is it a biological, clinical, populational, or behavioral LI?

Resource tip: for quick access to high yield textbooks: https://hslib.jabsom.hawaii.edu/MS1_MS2_Resources

What problems have you had?

27

28 of 62

Ask yourself -

General / Background?

Example: What is the basic mechanism of swallowing?

Example: Ddx of sore throat

Hint: Think Clinical & Biological LIs

28

29 of 62

Or is it...

Something more specific? Foreground information?

Example: Why do adolescents drink and drive?

Example: Community based issues, statistical information, etc.

Hint: think Behavioral & Populational LIs

Populational

PubMed can be tricky to search. Try different search terms, don’t take the LI at face value. Some PBL tutors may want to see more primary sources and it will become increasingly useful as you move toward clinical years so get comfortable with it!

Use the Google shortcuts!

Behavioral

Citing and other tips

Citing tip: Just do it

Productivity tip: Install LibKey

Information Ethics

As a JABSOM student, you have access, through the library, to download full text copies of certain articles and books.

You CAN share a list of links with each other

Do not share downloaded copies, you should obtain your own downloads

36

37 of 62

Why citing is important

References provide a “paper trail” to help readers understand how your research led to the ideas in your work

  • Helps you avoid plagiarism
  • Shows that your work is built on a solid foundation

37

38 of 62

Cite sources in LIs

  • Generate from the database
  • Include book chapters in citation
  • For websites, at the very least, web page title and link

38

39 of 62

Citation generators

  • OneSearch - for books
  • PubMed - for biomedical articles
  • Google Scholar - for most books and article titles (choose Vancouver!)

Quick and dirty, one time use citations

Citing book chapters

Example: Author(s). Chapter title. Edition. In: Author, Book title. edition. Publisher, Year: pages.

  1. Bliss CM, Wolfe M. Chapter 34: Common clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal disease. In: Andreoli TE, Cecil RL, eds. Andreoli and Carpenter's Cecil Essentials of Medicine. 8th ed. Saunders/Elsevier; 2010:382-400.

Getting to Full Text articles

Google and PubMed

You search Google, you find a PubMed article, you try to get it, you hit a paywall

43

44 of 62

Good

An OK workaround:

copy+paste the title into OneSearch

44

45 of 62

Best

Better workaround:

Install LibKey to have your browser remember your UH affiliation, you’ll be presented with a button in the paywall to get to full-text

45

  1. Install extension

3. Take it for a test drive

Google a scholarly topic to find journal articles.

LibKey PDF button will probably appear somewhere on the left side of your screen.

Let’s review some concepts

Library Hours

Your library hours = MEB hours. We staff the desk M-F 8am to 5pm since those are the hours we are open to the public.

Textbooks

You CAN borrow them! Yes, most of the textbooks are online but some are only in print (especially for MD6).

Library website

Key to getting access to databases, you have to start from the library website: https://hslib.jabsom.hawaii.edu/library

MS1 / MS2 Guide

By no means an exhaustive list, rather a list of tried and true sources from you classmates: https://hslib.jabsom.hawaii.edu/MS1_MS2_Resources

Searching

Try different keywords, try to think of your topic from different angles. Try to stay in the academic databases. Google for background or government sources.

Ask for help

We know you’ll most likely ask your classmates for help first but we are here to help. Chat via the website or email hslinfo@hawaii.edu
