Library databases
OneSearch
Silo (e.g. AccessMed and ClinicalKey don’t speak to one another)
Disconnected
Makes finding info difficult
Lets you view results for multiple databases in one interface. Search by topic, a book title or article title

Summary
25
Choosing the right resource for LIs
Tip: Is it a biological, clinical, populational, or behavioral LI?
Resource tip: for quick access to high yield textbooks: https://hslib.jabsom.hawaii.edu/MS1_MS2_Resources
3
What problems have you had?
27
Ask yourself -
General / Background?
Example: What is the basic mechanism of swallowing?
Example: Ddx of sore throat
Hint: Think Clinical & Biological LIs
28
Or is it...
Something more specific? Foreground information?
Example: Why do adolescents drink and drive?
Example: Community based issues, statistical information, etc.
Hint: think Behavioral & Populational LIs
29
Library Resource Decision Tree
Domains of Learning Issues
and Resource Selection
31
Domain | Biological | Clinical | Behavioral | Populational |
Subject Area: | Anatomy Biochemistry Genetics Histology Immunology Microbiology Pathology Pharmacology Physiology | Etiology Diagnosis Treatment Prognosis Labs Medications Medical history Physical exam | Attitude Behavior Counseling & interviewing Cultural beliefs & values Emotions Health education Lifestyle Psychology | Community sources Cultural competency Epidemiology Healthcare financing Healthcare system Legal & ethical Socioeconomic factors |
Example LI: | What is the pathophysiology of fever, pain and inflammation? | Differential diagnosis of sore throat. | What is normal adolescent behavior? | Medical insurance, cost of healthcare, role of managed care. |
Database or search tool to use: | AccessMedicine ClinicalKey LWW | AccessMedicine ClinicalKey DynaMedex JoVE LWW PubMed | LWW OneSearch PubMed Google Scholar |
Activity: https://go.hawaii.edu/riv
Review
Pathophysiology of pain
Biological
DynaMedex, AccessMed, ClinicalKey - all have same information presented a little differently
Biological
Differences between AccessMed and DynaMed?
Pharmacology of aspirin
33
Review
Barriers to healthy lifestyle
Populational
PubMed can be tricky to search. Try different search terms, don’t take the LI at face value. Some PBL tutors may want to see more primary sources and it will become increasingly useful as you move toward clinical years so get comfortable with it!
Use the Google shortcuts!
Behavioral
Any trouble with OneSearch?
Note, OneSearch only searches titles, not content - compared to other dbs

Citing and other tips
Citing tip: Just do it
Productivity tip: Install LibKey
4
Information Ethics
As a JABSOM student, you have access, through the library, to download full text copies of certain articles and books.
You CAN share a list of links with each other
Do not share downloaded copies, you should obtain your own downloads
36
Why citing is important
References provide a “paper trail” to help readers understand how your research led to the ideas in your work
37
Cite sources in LIs
38
Citation generators
Quick and dirty, one time use citations
39
AccessMedicine
40
Citing book chapters
Example: Author(s). Chapter title. Edition. In: Author, Book title. edition. Publisher, Year: pages.

42
Getting to Full Text articles
Google and PubMed
You search Google, you find a PubMed article, you try to get it, you hit a paywall
43
Good
An OK workaround:
copy+paste the title into OneSearch
44
Best
Better workaround:
Install LibKey to have your browser remember your UH affiliation, you’ll be presented with a button in the paywall to get to full-text
45
46
Need to troubleshoot?
Go to: https://www.hawaii.edu/google/extra/ and Login

Extension for Firefox
49
2. Connect to UH Mānoa
Click on the LibKey icon in your browser bar.
Search for Manoa in the “Select Organization” box and press enter.
50
3. Take it for a test drive
Google a scholarly topic to find journal articles.
LibKey PDF button will probably appear somewhere on the left side of your screen.

Let’s review some concepts
Library Hours
Your library hours = MEB hours. We staff the desk M-F 8am to 5pm since those are the hours we are open to the public.
Textbooks
You CAN borrow them! Yes, most of the textbooks are online but some are only in print (especially for MD6).
Library website
Key to getting access to databases, you have to start from the library website: https://hslib.jabsom.hawaii.edu/library
MS1 / MS2 Guide
By no means an exhaustive list, rather a list of tried and true sources from you classmates: https://hslib.jabsom.hawaii.edu/MS1_MS2_Resources
Searching
Try different keywords, try to think of your topic from different angles. Try to stay in the academic databases. Google for background or government sources.
Ask for help
We know you’ll most likely ask your classmates for help first but we are here to help. Chat via the website or email hslinfo@hawaii.edu
