What is viscosity?

Viscosity is the resistance of a fluid to flow: Fluids with low viscosity have a low resistance and shear easily and the molecules flow quickly and high viscosity fluids move sluggishly and resist deformation. The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to deformation at a given rate. Different fluids have different viscosities, they flow at different speeds. Liquids like honey have high viscosity while others like gasoline have low viscosity.

What is speed?: rate at which an object covers up a certain distance.

What is slime?

A mixture of household items that come together to create a polymer substance that acts as solid and liquid.

Its viscosity can be influenced by factors other than temperature and pressure.

It's a non-newtonian fluid. Other examples for non-newtonian fluids are ketchup, toothpaste and shampoo.

How do you make slime?

MATERIALS: - Glue

  • Ariel detergent
  • Shaving cream (optional)

RECIPE: In a bowl, put glue. Start mixing and slowly add Ariel detergent until it takes the consistency of slime. After that add shaving cream (opcional). Then start shaping it with your hands until it is no longer sticky.

Scientific method of investigation

It's a method that scientists use to investigate. They follow a series of steps to reach a conclusion.

These steps include:

  1. Question: Does the amount of detergent affect the viscosity of slime?
  2. Hypothesis: it is a potential answer to the question done, that can be tested.

The greater the amount of detergent used will increase the viscosity of slime.

  • Testing: the procedure, explanation of what you are going to do in order to test whether your hypothesis is right or wrong.

Materials used: ruler, stopwatch, samples of slime.

Three samples of slime were made, with different amounts of detergent.

Sample A: Sample A has the least amount of detergent.

Sample B: Sample B has more detergent than Sample A.

Sample C: Sample C has the most amount of detergent.

A vertical distance of 50cm was set and the time it took for the different samples of slime to cover it was recorded in a table.

Conclusion:

Taking into account the results of our investigation we can conclude that detergent increases the viscosity of slime. So the time that the slime takes to cover the distance set is longer.
