HISTORY

NAFAA

1917 – 2025

At the beginning of the last century, in the midst of the liberation struggle for independence, Ukrainian Academy of Arts was established in 1917. In fact, our academy was founded in the dramatic historical era of the World War I, when cannon blasts and shots were heard in Kyiv and invaders shot people in the streets.

In 1924, merged with Kyiv Architectural Institute, the academy was renamed as Kyiv Art Institute. Talented artists-teachers, including Kazimir Malevich and Volodymyr Tatlin, were invited to join the faculty. Propaedeutic course of formal and technical disciplines in the schedule was similar to the program of Bauhaus.

For more than hundred years it has been the main principle of education at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture to provide artists with individual approach in educational and creative workshops which constitute the corresponding departments. The workshops are taught by outstanding artists–teachers.

During our present tragic times, as well as a century ago, our state now fights for its right to free life, which is based primarily on the principles of the national identity. This struggle is the key to the development of our culture and our people. Faculty, students, and staff of our Academy takes active part in this struggle.
