SSE: Website Overview

September 9, 2019

Audience

  • New people
  • Gives an overview of the website
  • We’ll walk you through setup for the website.

Install Git

  • What is Git?
  • A way for people to work together on code, in short.
  • Basically, your steps will be
    • Clone (or pull)
    • Make branch
    • Do work on branch
    • Commit
    • Push
    • Go back to (b)

Install VSCODE

  • Text editor & almost an IDE by this point.
  • Completely free
  • This is just a way to interact with your code, make changes, and have an integrated terminal (or command line, if you want) to interact with your code.
  • If you prefer something else (e.g., Webstorm, Brackets, etc….) go for it! VS Code is just a good tool for people of varying skill levels and is very widely used in industry.

The Command Line (#HackingThingy)

  • What is a COMMAND LINE?
  • A tool to interact with the OS using text instead of graphics
  • NOT “HACKING”
  • Using git and several of our other tools mean you’ll be using the command line.
  • This doesn’t have to be scary. It’s literally just like MS Office.
  • When someone says “run this command” what they actually mean is “open command prompt (or powershell, type this text in, and hit enter.”
  • DON’T type something in and hit enter unless you a) know what it’s doing or b) trust the source.

Helpful Tools

  • Learning the command line with git is very important. However, if you are struggling a lot, you may find Git Kraken to be very helpful:

Provides a VERY NICE graphical user interface for interacting with git.
