PROBLEM

Sampling hammer

Apollo Lunar Surface Drill

The problem is the lack of suitable drills for Red Planet exploration. At the moment, there are only mini-drills on rovers that dig to a depth of no more than 7 cm and do not have sufficient power and strength. Due to the lack of chemical analysis of rock, worthless samples are delivered to the Earth, which means a waste of time and resources.

How We Addressed This Challenge

3

Our idea is to create a structure that will dig to a great depth using a winch mechanism.

The resulting samples will be examined in situ using spectroscopy, which is used on the Perseverance rover.

DESCRIPTION

The drill is suspended on a steel cable and is limited by pipe-shaped plates. The lower part of the drill is a chisel with notches, where sand and stone get into during drilling.

When the drill stops working, a pump tube extends, which sends stones to the analyzer compartment.

In the compartment, the sample is divided into stones and sand, which are further analyzed and the results are transmitted to the Earth.
