Notes p. 4 - Atoms

  • Atoms are the building blocks of matter. They make up everything around us.

  • It is sort of how bricks are the building blocks of houses.

There are three parts of an atom

  • Proton = positive

  • Neutron = neutral

no charge

  • Electron = negative

5 of 35

Protons

  • Are located in the inside of the nucleus

  • They have a positive charge

6 of 35

Neutrons

  • Are located in the inside of the nucleus

  • They have a neutral charge

7 of 35

Electrons

  • Are located outside of the nucleus in shells

  • They have a negative charge

  • They are much smaller than protons and neutrons

Nucleus

  • The nucleus is made of protons and neutrons

  • The amount of protons is equal to the electrons.

This means atoms are neutral and do not have a charge!

  • What is one things you found interesting from the video?

2. What was one thing you learned?

3. What is one thing you already knew?

Don’t remember your atom?

Count your number of protons and then find the correct element on the periodic table up front.

Example:

7 protons = atomic # 7
