What is the Science of Reading?

  • Language comes naturally to children by listening to sounds, repeating them, and developing meaning of those sounds and words
  • READING DOES NOT COME NATURALLY like language does!
  • 5 components of reading
    • Phonemic Awareness (listening, speaking, rhyming)
    • Phonics (knowing & decoding groups of letters and their sounds)
    • Fluency (steady reading)
    • Vocabulary (knowledge of a lot of words)
    • Comprehension (ability to understand what they are reading)

READING COMPREHENSION = Decoding Ability x Language Comprehension
