• Scammers will take advantage of a senior citizen by obtaining money from them.
• Estimated that in 2023, it cost worldwide seniors $77.7 BILLION.
• A massive problem that many seniors do not know how to defend themselves against

Bank Representative Scam

• In this scam, a senior will receive a call, email, or text message
• Scammer will claim that they are representing the bank
• Will ask the senior to send a confirmation code for an unauthorized transaction
• However, this code gives them access to your bank account

How to Combat It

​

• First, Banks will RARELY call you if something happens, so automatically you should assume it is a scam
• DO NOT PICK UP THE CALL OR RESPOND TO THE MESSAGE
• Call your bank’s number on the back of your credit/debit card
• DO NOT TRUST WHAT AN UNKNOWN PERSON TELLS YOU

Bottom Line: If someone tells you that your account is in danger or that you have to do something, it is likely a scam, but the best thing to do is proactively contact your bank

Free Gift/Money/Vacation/Reward Scam

• Will be email or text claiming to have some sort of reward for you.
• They will then tell you to click on a link to claim your reward, or ask for personal information to send it to you
• Using that, they can get into your device and obtain account information and passwords.
• A lot of times, the email or text name will look real like “Costco Rewards” or “Target Shopping”

• This is the most simple scam to combat.
• ALWAYS IGNORE these messages
• If you’re ever unsure if they’re true or not, always click on the name of the email, and see if the email address looks legitimate— it usually is not.

The Known Person Scam

• The scammer will send you a message claiming to be someone you know.
• Family member, close friend, pastor, colleague, etc.
• Usually they will ask you for money pretending to be that person, and thinking you’ll believe them, they will obtain money that way.
• They often portray that person as being in some kind of trouble that your money will help alleviate.

How to Combat It

This is the trickiest scam to combat because you truly do not know if that person is actually who you know, or if it is a scam.

Having a strong password is essential to keeping any account safe.

When creating passwords, people usually do something personal: their name, birthday, address, etc.

However, this is not always the safest option.

• Replace letters with numbers, if possible, such as replacing an “a” with a “@” or “4”, an “e” with a “3”, a 1 for a L or I, and an “o” with a “0”
