The Transition From Oil to The Holy Spirit

Intro – In the Old Testament, the anointing is represented by the oil. It is poured on the object (temple, person) for consecration (first), then Service (second). The physical oil was only a shadow. The Holy Spirit is the substance behind the symbol. What oil did outwardly in the ancient times, the Spirit does inwardly in the believer, He sets him/her apart for use.

The New Covenant Anointing – The Anointing Within

Luke 4:18 - 18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Acts 10:38 – 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Word Study: “Upon Me” – /epi/ in, over, at…It speaks of one upon whom anything is imposed, as a burden, office, duty, or of one on whom an obligation has been laid

Anoint = /chrió/ to smear or rub with oil; The anointing signals divine endorsement and the supernatural equipment necessary for the Christian life and ministry.

Anointing as A Rub-Off Versus Service

Many people think anointing is first for power or ministry assignment. But the very first biblical instance teaches that Anointing is birthed in devotion before it is ever expressed in service. It is not just what we do, it is the smell that permeates the atmosphere around us. The aura that commands function, obedience and holy presence.

People can sense God around you just as dogs can sense fear around us.

Luke 4: 22And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”

2Cor.2:15 – 15For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

Webster Dictionary define Aroma as a subtle, pervasive quality or atmosphere:

It marks a divine influence that follows and makes us spiritually noticeable.

The anointing rests on our lives as believers but its flow can be hindered. Its freshness can become stale. Its fragrance can be bottle in a jar (unforgiveness, pride, arrogance, worldliness, distractions)

The Anointing Flows From The Head

Psalms 133:2 – 1Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!a 2It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes

  • Precious oil on the head – The anointing always begins with leadership (“the head”) before the people (“the body”). The head is the unifying ground of the whole body. If the head is diseased, the whole body suffers.

  • Running down on the beard – Culturally among Jews, the beard symbolizes maturity, dignity, and authority. In the ANE, it represent honor, manhood, office, public respect

The Anointing flows through honor, maturity, our office (area of assignment) public respect.

  • Running down on the collar of his robes – It flows as it is poured. From inner life → to outward ministry

What Receives the Anointing? The Priest’s Robe

Aaron’s priestly robe represent ministry, worship, service, assignment. These garments absorbs to oil. The Anointing pours on and saturates our ministry & functions.

When our robes are soaked with the oil, our worship carries weight, prayer carries fire, preaching carries power, service carries Grace, the church moves in supernatural ease.

In Context… Believers’ Gathering

Psalms 133:2 – 1Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!a 2It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes

Unity is the Key word here. We are already united in Christ (Gal.2:20, Rom 6:3-5, Eph.1:11) So the anointing abide in us (1Jn.2:27)

But the flow of the anointing in our lives is tied to the presence of unity among believers in a gathering/church.

Unity lets the oil keep flowing. Division blocks the flow.

Note:

  • A unified church carries an attractive spiritual presence
  • People can “smell” the presence of God in a spiritually unified assembly

Unity in a church is not organizational. It is not agreement. It is corporate consecration. Every individual is oiled so the flow moves seamlessly.

Eph.4:3 – 3Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. NLT

and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. BSB
