Illinois Report Card and Summative Designations

8 of 56

Illinois Report Card

  • Released by the state every October to show how the state, district and each school are doing on a range of educational goals
  • Three versions available online (and linked on our website as of the public release)
    • Static PDF
    • Illinois Interactive Report Card
    • At-A-Glance
  • Includes data on achievement, growth, attendance and much more

9 of 56

What is a Summative Designation?

  • Stems from the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which is federal legislation that requires each state to create an accountability plan
  • Began in the 2018-19 school year; has not been calculated since Fall 2019 due to the pandemic
  • Is intended to be education and equitable, but not punitive
  • Designed to identify schools in the state that need support and then to provide that support

Summative Designation Data

Math and ELA Proficiency (15 %)

  • Based upon distance from State targets
    • At or above state targe = 100% of points possible
    • Below target = lower percentage of points possible
  • Targets are defined for all student groups and each demographic group
  • New this year, there are grade-band targets (gr 3-4; gr 5-6; gr 7-8)

Summative Designation Data

Summative Designation Data

Math and ELA Growth (50%)

  • Calculated two ways:
    • For purposes of summative designation, calculated against 2019 Baseline of students w/same score
    • For School Report Card, calculated against 2021 cohort of students w/same score
  • Different calculation than ECRA; ECRA takes into account more individualized targets and localized information

16 of 56

Summative Designation Data

Science (5%)

  • In 2022 only, Science is based on participation and not proficiency
  • Above 95% = 100% of points possible
  • Between 75=95% = adjusted percentage
  • Below 75% = 0% of points possible

EL Progress to Proficiency (5%)

  • Only calculated when 20 or more students in the building in grades 2-6/7-8
  • When not calculated, that 5% is divided across the remaining academic categories

17 of 56

Summative Designation Data

Chronic Absenteeism (20%)

  • Percentage of students who are absent more than 10% of the school year for any reason
  • Bonus points in 2022 based upon the percentage of decline between 2019 and 2022
    • For example, if declined by more than 7.5%, a 25% bonus is awarded

Climate Survey (5%)

  • Student Participation Rate in 5Essentials Survey

Growth Scores and Effect Size

Growth scores represent the magnitude of the difference between actual and expected achievement. Each

deviation from zero indicates more (or less) than expected growth observed in the District based on

historical data. A negative growth score does not indicate a student is losing knowledge, but rather that

the student did not learn as much throughout the school year as his or her peers with the same historical

achievement.

For groups of students, the following two conditions must be met in order for a growth score to be

deemed statistically and educationally significant:

▪ The difference between projected and actual achievement is statistically significant.

▪ The magnitude of the growth statistic is greater than or equal to the absolute value of 0.3, which

is established as an educationally relevant effect size by the research community.

Responding to Data

School Improvement Goal 1

Statement of Goal

El Sierra School will continue targeted instruction of foundational skills and vocabulary development during the 2022-23 school year in all instructional environments throughout the building.

46 of 56

Responding to Data

Rationale for Goal

The El Sierra Instructional Leadership Team met several times to review data and assess areas of strength and areas for potential growth within our school and determined that a continued focus is needed in the area of foundational skills at the kindergarten through second-grade levels, and vocabulary development in grades three through six. The use of foundational skills in small groups in kindergarten through second grade and the Benchmark vocabulary curriculum in grades three through five, along with StudySync vocabulary in sixth grade will provide students with targeted instruction in these areas.

47 of 56

Responding to Data

Implementation and Support of Goal

The strength of this goal will be measured by the fidelity in which the resources are used, the time allocated to professional development in these areas at faculty meetings and professional learning Mondays, and student progress as measured by classroom data, and NWEA MAP scores. El Sierra will utilize the grade-level team meetings to discuss strategies and model lessons with a focus on foundational skills and vocabulary. These activities will be led by the reading specialist and principal.

Responding to Data

Plans and Timelines to Measure Effectiveness

The success of this goal is ultimately measured by the presence of instruction aligned with the resources, strategies, and pedagogy within the Benchmark/StudySync curricula. This instructional presence will be verified using a combination of observational and feedback tools, including but not limited to principal walk-throughs and observations, teacher reflection and feedback, review of lesson plans and materials, student artifacts and outcomes, grade level collaboration and conversations, and year-end review of sequence and pacing.

School Improvement Goal #2

Statement of Goal

El Sierra School will implement targeted instruction of informational text during the 2022-23 school year in all instructional environments throughout the building.

50 of 56

Responding to Data

Rationale for Goal

The El Sierra Instructional Leadership Team met several times to review data and assess areas of strength and areas for potential growth within our school and determined that a focus is needed in the area of informational text at the kindergarten through sixth-grade levels, According to the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, a strong foundation in informational text is essential because “ We are surrounded by text whose primary purpose is to convey information about the natural or social world. Success in schooling, the workplace, and society depends on our ability to comprehend this material.” The focus of explicitly teaching how to interpret informational text in all settings in kindergarten through fifth grade with the ELA resources of Benchmark and StudySync in 6th grade, along with the science and social studies curricular materials will provide students with targeted instruction.
