Scheduling Timeline

CAMS Students

• 9^th Grade Orientation will be hosted at CASHS in February
• Students will receive overview of CASHS courses and activities
• Upon return to CAMS each student will receive their course request worksheet
• Select core classes, and choose top 6 elective options
• Parents should review and sign course request worksheet–students will use these to enter course requests in sapphire

• Return forms to team teacher
• Early March, students will input course requests into Sapphire

​

New Students (Move-ins or transfers)

• Register at the district admin office in June 2023
• Counselors will contact you over the summer (July/Early Aug) to schedule courses

• Be aware of College Admission Requirements
• What knowledge do I need to have in order to set myself up for success in College or the Workforce or the Military?

• Do I plan to be an athlete in college?

• What responsibilities do I have in addition to my academic classes?
• Time management is essential—we want students to challenge themselves NOT overwhelm themselves!

CASHS has a 7 period day which means you can select up to 7.0 credits within your school day

Remember that BAND and SYMPHONY meet before/after school so they can be scheduled IN ADDITION to your 7.0 credits

Act 158 Graduation Pathways:

​

• Act 158 of 2018 (Act 158), signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf on October 24, 2018, provides alternatives to Pennsylvania's statewide requirement of attaining proficiency on the three end-of-course Keystone Exams (Algebra I, Literature, and Biology) for a student to achieve statewide graduation requirements. 
• Effective with the graduating class of 2023, students have the option to demonstrate postsecondary preparedness through one of four additional pathways that more fully illustrate college, career, and community readiness. Keystone Exams will continue as the statewide assessment Pennsylvania uses to comply with accountability requirements set forth in the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Although students will no longer be required to achieve proficiency on the Keystone Exams to meet the statewide graduation requirement, students must take the Keystone Exams for purposes of federal accountability.

English

Two options for English next year—consult your child’s current teacher for recommendations:

• English 9
• Honors English 9

Passing your English class will result in earning 1.0 credit toward the 4.0 credits required for graduation

​

Math

Options for next year—consult with your child’s current math teacher for recommendations:

• Algebra 1 (most students will sign up for this)—this is a double period math class and will result in earning 2.0 credits
• Algebra 2 or Honors Algebra 2 (students may select this option after successful completion of Algebra I)
• Geometry or Honors Geometry (students may select this option after successful completion of Algebra I)

​

Passing your Math class will result in earning 2.0 credits (Algebra 1) or 1.0 credit (Algebra 2 or Geometry) toward the 4.0 credits required for graduation

​

We encourage students to take MATH EVERY year of high school

​

​

Traditional Math Sequence:

Algebra 1 → Geometry and/or Algebra 2 (take both same year or consecutive years) → Probability & Statistics and/or Trig (each half year) and/or Conceptual Statistics

​

Algebra 1 → Honors Geometry and/or Honors Algebra 2 (take both same year or consecutive years) → Pre-Calculus → AP Calculus AB → AP Calculus BC

​

Science

Options for next year

• Environmental Science
• Honors Biology (recommended course for students who successfully complete Earth/Physical Science in 8^th grade)

Passing your Science class will result in earning 1.0 credit toward the 3.0 credits required for graduation

​

Social Studies

Options for next year

• Early American History
• Honors Early American History

​

Passing your History class will result in earning 1.0 credit toward the 3.5 credits required for graduation

​

​

Fitness/Wellness

9^th graders will choose 1 of the following P.E. Courses:

• Team Sports, Cardio Endurance, or Lifelong Fitness
• Students will need to purchase and change into a P.E. Uniform for this class—Available in the CASHS School Store

Passing your physical education class will result in earning 0.5 credit toward the 1.5 credits required for graduation

Communication Seminar

​

This is a CASD required course for graduation. ALL 9^th grade students will take this course.

​

Passing this course will satisfy the 0.5 credit required for graduation

World Language

Why take a language in 9th grade?

�*Starting language in 9th grade provides you the opportunity to take 4 years of a language.��*Most colleges require AT LEAST two years of high school world language (and in some cases three or more) for admission.

​

If you plan to take 3 (or more) years of world language in high school you should strongly consider starting at the HONORS level. World language teachers recommend that students taking HONORS English should also consider HONORS world language.

​

World Language Sequence:

General 1 → General 2 → Honors 2 → Honors 3 (or IB level 1)

​

Honors 1 → Honors 2 → Honors 3 (or IB level 1) → AP (or IB level 2)

9^th grade students will have a limited selection of elective courses to choose from. Departments include:

Art, Agriculture, Business, Family & Consumer Science, Music, JROTC, Technology Education, World Language—something for everyone!

Students who choose to take a study hall will have few, if any, elective courses in their schedule
