High Temperature Hazards

  • Ignition of flammable vapors
  • Electrical shock from ungrounded or faulty units
  • Ignition of materials being heated
  • Pressure build-up in sealed containers
  • Integrity of containers holding materials
  • Sudden boiling of liquid in an open container following removal

  1. Make sure items are compatible with oven temperature. Do not place flammable materials like foam, paper, rubber septum etc. inside.
  2. Leave enough headspace in the vial, especially if you are running reactions near the boiling point of the solvent or if you’re scaling up a reaction.
  3. Ensure the oven has sample racks and use a glass secondary container to hold your vials. Do NOT put your reaction on the bottom of the oven.
  4. When removing samples/glassware, wear dry padded gloves. When wet, the padded gloves do not provide heat protection.
  5. Remove all blockage from the ventilation holes on the side or rear of the body. Failure to do so may cause a fire due to insufficient ventilation.
