By November 22, 2022…

Each forum must:

  1. Be ready to present/share a more in-depth explanation of your assigned decade to another forum (or two) in the morning;
  2. Create a trifold poster highlighting some of the history - and especially local Black history (to be used/displayed throughout the year);
  3. Be ready to share more briefly during the schoolwide visit & learn time in the afternoon.

24 of 29

An Important Note & Reminder

With your forum and each team, make sure there is a respectful emphasis on understanding Black/African American contributions during your decade. This day should be fun and engaging while still being appropriate and respectful.

While we must acknowledge the challenges and discrimination people faced throughout our history, we want to emphasize the ways in which the community and individual people not only survived but also thrived in the face of discrimination.

Their contributions to art, cooking, music, and fashion should be highlighted but not tokenized (done as only a minor part of your work) nor appropriated (taking on a culture that is not your own).

To be 100% clear on this - there should not be anything done to hair, skin color, how you speak, etc., that is not how you normally would do it.

25 of 29

Suggested Organization for Forums - TEams / Committees

Fashion

Possible Goal:

Share ideas/inspiration for how your forum could (respectfully) dress on November 22.

(NOTE: This means that we’re aiming for styles not unnatural changes to hair, skin, etc.)

History

Possible Goal:

Create a presentation (or video, comic, etc.) highlighting national/international context, local history, and the lives of local Black/African American people and communities.

Art

Possible Goal:

Create a set of Google Slides (or other format of slideshow) of art to play on November 22.

Music

Possible Goal:

Create a playlist (on Youtube or Spotify) to play on November 22.

Food

Possible Goal:

Create & help forum members sign up to cook/bring in dishes, drinks, desserts, etc. on November 22.

As a forum:

Collaborate or designate representatives to create your trifold poster presentation.

26 of 29

Possible Deadlines

By Monday, November 21

  • Have final drafts of projects from all teams/committees.
  • Finalize trifold poster.
  • Assign roles and responsibilities (and/or do a sort of dress rehearsal) for the next day!

By Tuesday, November 15

  • Teams/Committees have key information and/or draft of project.
  • Forum establishes rough plan for November 22.
