Bill 33: How it could affect my child’s education.

What does this mean for our children’s education?

    • Trustees could be removed
    • Limiting parent/guardian participation & voice
    • Further increases to class sizes could happen
    • Programs could be cut from boards
    • Cuts to support staff could happen
    • Further crumbling school buildings
    • Increase in classroom incidents (due to overcrowding)
    • Police presence in schools

More central bureaucratic control will remove the programs that different communities have developed over time. A one size fits all answer from northern Ontario to Windsor governed by Queen’s Park without accountability will impoverish our students’ education.

What is Supervision?

On Friday, June 27, 2025, Minister of Education Paul Calandra announced 4 school boards were being taken over by Supervision.

Key points:

    • A single Ministry appointed staff makes all decisions for school boards taken over
    • TDSB and 4 other boards are each currently governed through supervision, that is 25% of all Ontario students
    • Decisions are made behind closed doors without any public input. Parent and student voices have no space left to be heard.
    • Supervisor can cut any program and change any policy the Ministry tells them to and the public will only find out after the decision is made

Supervision: how could it affect my child’s education?

What does this mean for our children’s education?

    • Trustees currently have no role in the running of the school board
    • CAC’s are currently either suspended or meetings are held without live broadcasts
    • Decisions have already been made that are impacting class sizes, without information to the public
    • Supervisor is not meeting or responding to parents or community needs
    • Minister Calanda has said:
      • Boards are outdated
      • Capital projects should move to Infrastructure Ontario
      • Decision needs to be made this year about future of school boards (e.g. removing school boards altogether)
