  • Continued family partnerships given fluctuating enrollment and in a virtual setting
  • Staffing needs have fluctuated since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic

Reviewing state assessment data, what steps are you taking for all students to maximize their scores?

For the Virtual School, the program has continued to engage in a more targeted focus on Building Leadership Team/Professional Learning Community structures which, in turn, provides a sustained focus on student achievement and desired outcomes. This year, the staff has focused even more greatly on individualized tutoring supports for students and moving forward will be looking to expand those services.

Are there set targets/goals to move students out of proficiency Levels 1 and 2 on state assessments?

In a Virtual setting, this can be challenging as we have a mobile student population, re-enrollments combined with the nature of a Virtual program where the parent prefers to maintain more control of learning environment. Connected, we have more "parent refusals" for state assessments than typical buildings. However, our staff have focused on weekly/monthly tracking of student performance and work completed lead to this goal as well as ongoing communication with families and incorporation of Edmentum online curricula with district screening/benchmarking in FastBridge.

Identify the barriers that must be overcome for each student to achieve grade level proficiency on assessments.

For Leavenworth Virtual School, there are key barriers that must be overcome to help each student achieve grade level proficiency. Some of these include the challenge of family engagement in the context of a virtual school setting, an increase in social-emotional needs of students, and an increase in students with at-risk factors in the virtual program as well as fluctuating enrollments since the onset of the initial pandemic.

Identify the budget actions that should be taken to address and remove those barriers.

Some budget actions that could be considered include increased salary to retain/recruit staff, additional substitute teacher availability for the entire system, and additional supports to benefit the academic and social-emotional needs of our students.

Identify the amount of time the board estimates it will take for each student to achieve grade level proficiency on the state assessments if the budget actions would be implemented.

Our ever-changing student population brings a varying degree of cognitive abilities and disabilities which precludes us from being able to guarantee a date when all students will meet a singular level of proficiency. Further, though we use our assessment scores, these are only one measure to gauge proficiency and student success.

Based on your needs assessment process, what 5 things would make your school a perfect school?

1. Higher level of parent engagement to ensure that students are maintaining program attendance and participation expectations, especially for students serving long-term suspensions.

2. Staffing levels: 1 FTE facilitator to 25 student ratio for effective caseload management.

3. Ongoing professional development specific to virtual education.

4. Smartboard purchase for usage with group collaboration, Zooms, webinars, and Fun Fridays.

5. Hot spots w/ unlimited data available per request for families without strong internet connectivity at home.
