School Supplies & Summer Reading

  • On the Edgemont Jr/Sr High School website (ehs.edgemont.org), click on STUDENTS → school supply list → then click on 7th grade.

  • Summer reading: Students will have summer reading each year, depending on the English class they are enrolled in for the fall. The 7th grade book is Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings. Additional info can be found here.

Do students generally use 1 binder for each subject?

  • Teachers will ask for 1” binders for each subject.
  • Many kids opt for 1 or 2 big binders – e.g., an am/pm binder
  • Depending on the subject and teacher, you can share binders between classes - and many will ask you to empty the binder after a unit (but save the material at home)

Do students use their lockers?

  • Many kids do not use lockers because they say they have no time between classes/buildings. These lockers are assigned.
  • You have to sign up for gym lockers. On the ehs.edgemont.org website, Click on Departments, → Physical Education → locker registration (need to know the locker number you’re asking for and your locker combination to sign up).

How do students keep track of assignments-on the computer or in an agenda book like 6th grade?

  • Some kids will use planners but most will log into Google Classroom and go into each class separately. There’s also a “View to-do list” tab in google classroom that will compile all HW that is due or missing.
    • Class lists? EHS does not publish class lists as in K-6 grades, but under each individual class in Google Classroom, you may see who has been added to each class by the teacher. Students do NOT travel with the same kids from class to class.

  • Assignments should be posted by the end of the school day, on days that the class meets, and due on days the class meets. The 7th grade teacher team tries to coordinate when tests are given so students aren’t overloaded.

  • Advice: Make sure your student has notifications “ON” their phone for the Google Classroom app. (You may have Google Classroom on your phone as well, if you feel it will help keep your student accountable)

  • Many teachers use Google Classroom to communicate grades for assessments & assignments, but it is not always up to date. If a student is missing an assignment or needs extra help, each teacher has Office Hours once a week before school and once a week after school. If an additional appt is warranted, the student should email the teacher and inquire. It is the student’s responsibility to stay on top of assignments and grades.

7th grade adjustment…

  • By 7th grade most kids are ready for more freedom and responsibility
  • It is an adjustment – for them and for you!
  • The goal is for them to advocate for themselves, but you know your kid - if they can advocate, or if you can push them to advocate, do so
    • But if not, you can reach out to teachers
    • You can also reach out to counselors for help and guidance
  • New next year: Partnership with Study Skills organization to help students

Midterms/Finals

  • Midterms: No set dates/times for exams and not all subjects will have them.

  • School typically ends the second week of June (June 12th this year)
  • Finals start day after.
  • After the last day of classes, students should only be on campus if they have an exam or review session.
  • Teachers will have pre and post exam review sessions during this time, as well, at their discretion.
  • 7th graders have 2-3 finals in June (subjects vary from year to year).
  • Number of finals increases each year.

When are students given choices in the courses they take?

  • There is a course catalog available here. There are general graduation requirements as well.

  • In 7th & 8th grade their courses are assigned. They have choice of language and if they participate in chorus/band/orchestra. Those classes meet during the school day. If a student doesn’t participate in chorus/band/orchestra, they will have a study hall.

  • Starting in 9th grade they are given elective choices, and choices increase each year (Science, English, History).

Tips on lunch cards and cafeteria

  • To access online acct, ehs.edgemont.org → Parents → Lunch Account Management→ Manage Lunch Account (Pay Schools Central).
  • This year, the cafeteria is going cashless. In order to avoid the $1.50 plus 3.5% of the payment when paying with a credit card online ($1.95 per transaction when paying via ACH), you can send in a check (no fee) and your child will bring it to the lunch cashiers to add money to their account.
  • In the acct, you can monitor your kids spending by looking at Meal Account Reports.
  • *** The money gets added to their Student ID card (given out on On Deck day in August or first day of school- same card they use to enter school buildings during the day).***

Sports & Extracurriculars

  • Athletic Website: https://www.edgemont.org/departments/athletics
  • 3 seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring
  • 3 levels of play: Modified (7th & 8th grade), JV and Varsity
    • Middle School students may try out for JV, depending on the sport, if they pass the medical and physical test
    • Not all sports have all 3 levels of play
    • Modified fall sports start 9/6/25 (after JV and Varsity) - registration opens 8/16
    • All sports use FINAL FORMS to register and submit medical forms (medical form is your annual check-up from pediatrician)
    • Team practice locations can be found on this page under “General Practice Information”

  • TRYOUTS? Varies from sport to sport, year to year

  • Each sport has practice after school starting at 4pm. Modified usually practices for 1.5 hours, whereas JV and varsity practice for 2 hours. The locations for each practice are posted here. It is the student’s responsibility to get to the practice field (Seely, Greenville or EHS). Buses are only provided for away games/meets.

How are clubs organized? Are the clubs by grade or all together?

  • Most student clubs are inclusive (grades 7-12) and have a mixture of students involved
  • There is an Activities Fair early in the year (Sept/Oct) for the students to see their options
  • There are clubs that do have grade requirements (Model UN for instance)
  • Clubs can be started by any student. There are requirements (they need a teacher to agree to advise the club, and the BoE approves it), but grade level is not one of them

Clubs Cont’d - PTSA & PTA

  • High School is building resilient and independent children and before you know it young adults.

  • The students and teachers pick the clubs. (They are not parent-run!) The school picks the plays. Teachers create the curriculum.
    • Our sub committees (STEM and ACE) support the teachers and administration, but unlike in elementary we do not run the play or clubs we advocate and support.

  • Kids come home and surprise you and say – Hi, I am joining a specific club, and they do it on their own! They are empowered to make their own choices.

What is the PTSA and what does it support?

  • Your membership dues support the EHS curriculum and our children's education and help fund: programs, events, enrichment, grants for arts and science programs, field trips, speakers, student activities

  • Only members have access to the PTSA directory and receive weekly PTSA newsletters.

  • Membership information will be sent out in August and is HIGHLY encouraged - the grade with the highest membership rate earns a lunchtime pizza party.

  • Membership will be purchased using the same login you used this current year for Membership Toolkit.

  • View our website: edgemontptsa.org

What are the responsibilities of a class parent and when do we sign up?

  • Each grade has approximately 10 grade parents, including one chair who coordinates the team.
  • Sign-ups for 7th grade will be sent via a PTA blast in the coming weeks. Sign-ups are done on a first come, first served basis. If you are not a class parent, there are other ways to be involved - candy/pizza sales, ACE/STEM committees, general volunteering!
  • Each grade is responsible for one event over the year. For 7th grade, it’s serving apple cider donuts/apple cider to 7th and 8th graders. All grades will assist with an International Dessert Buffet in June.
  • Click here for an overview of the 2024-2025 responsibilities. There will be some slight changes for the 2025-2026 year.
  • Grade parents are also asked to assist with PTSA requests/events as needed (although all parents can volunteer for PTSA events where volunteers are needed)
  • All grade parents must be paid members of the PTSA.

Pick up and drop off at EHS

  • Before school: Students may arrive earlier for office hours or other reasons—the library and cafeteria are open and available for them before the school day begins.
  • School starts at 8:25am (Bell schedule here)

  • School ends at 3:07pm. After school office hours are held after 3:07pm (athletics don’t start until 4pm to accommodate office hours, although some clubs will start at dismissal).

  • Advice for Parents with Students in Both Elementary & High School

If you have children at both levels, drop off your EHS student first and pick them up last. The library and cafeteria open early, and morning office hours are available—making early arrival a good option. In the afternoon, students can stay in the library after school until pickup.

  • If you want to avoid EHS during drop off or pick up, where can you go?
    • Round Hill Road or Old Colony Road
    • Behind Achieve Martial Arts (the small plaza where Funcraft used to be) or Burger King
    • Edgemont Circle

Help - It’s Almost School and my child doesn’t have their schedule?!

  • Do not worry, students always receive their schedule right before school starts (and for 7th graders, always before on deck day). Both parents and students will receive an email from Edgemont School District when schedules are available on infinite campus and direct them to login (infinite campus is also used in K-6 for report cards, etc.; same login).

What we wish we knew, or what our kids wish they knew…

  • The upperclassmen aren’t scary. They have all been in your child's shoes and they want to help. If your child can’t find a class or has any question at all, they will always find a friendly student nearby to help and they shouldn’t think twice about asking for help.
  • Yes, 7th graders will have classes in classrooms next to 12th graders, and all grades for that matter. All buildings are utilized by all grades (7-12) all day long.
  • The schedule will seem confusing for a few days, but then it becomes second nature. Many students take a screenshot of their schedule the first week and make it their screensaver on their phone so it’s easily accessible.
  • Administration is super friendly. If a student has any issue, Mr Hosier encourages open communications. Your child should not be afraid to stop by and speak to him. Same for the APs.
  • The PTSA is also here to help – email us at edgemont.ptsa.pres@gmail.com with any questions you have!
