You try (Answers):

1. Find the percent equivalent to 60/115. Round to the nearest tenth percent. 52%

2. 15% of 80 is what value? 12

3. 27 is 30% of what number? 90

4. Sami is keeping track of the amount of salt she consumes each day. According to the label on her macaroni and cheese box, one serving contains 470 mg of sodium (salt). If 470 mg is 20% of the recommended daily amount, how many milligrams of sodium are recommended for the whole day? 2350 mg

What is a food desert?

  • Food deserts are places where most residents don’t have access to affordable, nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines a community as a food desert if:
    • The area has a poverty rate of at least 20%
    • In urban areas, at least 33% of the population lives more than 1 mile from the nearest grocery store
    • In rural areas, at least 33% of the population lives more than 10 miles from the nearest grocery store
  • REMEMBER – there is a BIG difference between a food desert and food insecurity.

Saint Petersburg’s Population (as of 2022): 258,201

  • In St. Pete, 12.4% of people live in poverty. How many people are in poverty in the city of St. Petersburg?
  • 258,201*0.124=32016.924 🡪 32,016 people
  • Because the statistic is under the federal guideline of 20% do you think food deserts do not exist in St. Pete?

Undernourishment is not the result of a world without enough food

  • The average adult needs, about, 2,000 calories a day.
    • The amount you actually need depends on age, gender, lifestyle and more.
    • The world has enough food for everyone to get that amount. Some countries even have more!

Imagine If…

Turn and talk with your table/partner. How can we re-imagine getting rid of food deserts? Use the following questions as a guide to your conversation.

  • In what ways could food distribution (eradicated food deserts) be made to be more effective?
  • In what ways could it be made to be more efficient?
  • In what ways could it be made to be more ethical?
  • In what ways could it be made to be more beautiful?

Read the article on food deserts and answer the following questions:

  1. In the US, we have 189.1% of the daily recommend calories for each person. How many calories is that? (remember the daily rec. is 2,000 calories).
  2. The current US population is 333,287,557. If 40.5% of people live in a food desert, how many people is live in those areas?
  3. 45.1% of people in the US have food allergies. How many people in the US is that?
  4. If a gallon of milk is $4 and urban residents pay 37% more (on average), how much are they paying for a gallon of milk?

Make a Flipgrid (Flip) Video!

  • With a partner, complete the following:
    • Create a flip grid video that includes an introduction of who you are (name, age, grade) and where you live (St. Petersburg, FL).
    • Three things you learned about food deserts that include percentages and their meanings! (For example, 12.4% of St. Pete’s population lives in poverty which is about 32,017 people).
    • At least one idea you had to help decrease the effects of food deserts.
    • 6th graders from a school is West Virginia will be commenting on your Flips! They are learning about SDG 2, as well.
    • Share with Ms. K 🡪 kruegerk@pcsb.org
