Why is having a solid math foundation so important?

Mathematics builds on itself. If the foundation of mathematics is not mastered, the building blocks of mathematics may not develop, and students will most likely struggle to make necessary connections within the content material or fully understand higher level mathematical concepts.

By the end of Kindergarten student should...

  • Count to 100 by ones and tens.
  • Use objects to count (like blocks), add and subtract up to 10.
  • Understand the numbers 11-19 as a ten and some ones.
  • Identify circles, squares, triangles and rectangles.

By the end of 1st grade student should...

  • Count and write within 120.
  • Add within 100.
  • Addition and subtraction facts to 20.
  • Addition and subtraction as inverse operations (putting together/taking apart)/Fact Families
  • Measure Objects
  • Telling time to the hour and half hour
  • Understand basic fractions

By the end of 2nd grade...

  • Count within 1,000 (by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s, 100’s)
  • Understand place value in 3-digit numbers
  • Compare 3-digit numbers (< > =)
  • Add/subtract within 1,000
  • Measurement (mostly length)
  • Telling time to the nearest 5 minutes
  • Word problems involving money
  • Picture and bar graphs

The Georgia Standards of Excellence is changing to Georgia’s K-12 Mathematics Standards starting Fall 2023.

The new standards focus on application of math in the real world and promotes critical/statistical reasoning and modeling to prepare students for the workforce.

A solid math foundation begins with building number sense.

Number sense is the single best indicator of students’ success in math.

Number sense is the ability to understand, relate, and connect numbers.

Children with strong number sense think flexibly and fluently about numbers.

  • Visualize and talk comfortably about numbers. Number bonds are one tool to help them see the connections between numbers.
  • Take numbers apart and put them back together in different ways
  • Compute mentally — solving problems in their heads instead of using a paper and pencil.
  • Relate numbers to real-life problems by connecting them to their everyday world.

Subitizing is the ability to instantly recognize the number of objects without actually counting them. Much like the importance of being able to calculate estimates, subitizing is something that comes up in the everyday lives of students. Subitizing is the basis of number sense.

Number Talks�(Math Chats)

Number talks are a great way to get students thinking and speaking about math! They give students the opportunity to talk about their reasoning and strategies, and allows the chance to look for and apply math connections and relationships between concepts.

Benefits of Number Talks:

*Builds Number Sense

*Helps develop speaking and listening skills

*Helps students see that there are different ways to solve math problems

*Teaches number flexibility (grouping/breaking apart)

*Helps students “understand” math facts instead of just memorizing
