Research Based Intervention: Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader

Intervention Description: Accelerated Reader™ is a computerized supplementary reading program that provides guided reading instruction to students in grades K–12. It aims to improve students’ reading skills through reading practice and by providing frequent feedback on students’ progress to teachers. (WWC, 2016)

Research that supports the intervention: The WWC considers the extent of evidence for Accelerated Reader™ on the reading achievement of beginning readers to be small for two student outcome domains—comprehension and reading fluency. (WWC Intervention Report, 2016)

  • Teachers are open to varying instruction over the course of the school year.
  • Teachers want input into the types of assessment and when to use them
  • Teachers have agreed to use consistent assessment plans through the entire grade level
  • There is concern that teachers will be micromanaged and lose creative control
