Context

  • Several Clients visit our sites each year with a Form W-2G generated by gambling winnings from Louisiana
    • Louisiana almost always withholds state taxes from these winnings
  • Clients would like us to file a Louisiana State Tax Return to get their withholding refunded.
    • Alternative is a Paid Preparer, or use the AARP State Tax Assistance Preparation (STAP)
  • Capability exists within TaxSlayer to E-File Louisiana State Tax Returns and Direct Deposit their Refunds.

Preparing a Louisiana State Tax Return

  • Limited Scope
    • Louisiana Non-Residents only
      • Clients live in another state (Texas) the whole year and have no domicile in Louisiana.
    • Reporting W-2G Louisiana Gambling Winnings only
      • If they have other W-2’s or 1099’s with Louisiana State Tax withheld refer to AARP STAP (discussed next)

Preparing the Return

  • Complete the Federal Return normally in TaxSlayer
  • Include the Form W-2G State ID, Winnings and Income Tax Withheld along with the Federal information
    • Federal Section > Income > Less Common Income > Gambling Winnings W-2G
  • The following example assumes a return is already prepared and we are entering State of Louisiana Gambling Winnings of $1000 and Louisiana Withholding of $250

  • TaxSlayer Practice Lab made LA State Tax Returns active on December 31, 2025
  • Currently there is a concern TaxSlayer Practice Lab is not calculating LA Taxable Income and Tax correctly
