Directions

  • Follow along with the video to find the beat for the song “Hipster Girl” by Sango; counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
  • Practice listening for the triple hi-hat along with the hosts and using your fingers to accent the counts 8 e &.
  • Next, work on the bass and follow along drumming on the 1 &, 4 &, a 6.
  • Follow the lyrics section to familiarize yourself with this concept.
  • Break down your favorite songs.

Kid ‘n Play

Directions

  • Watch the video on the right side of the screen, and learn this classic dance move.
  • What groove do you notice/feel in the Kid ‘n Play?
  • Bounce/Jump
  • Up
  • Down
  • Drop
  • Do the Kid ‘n Play to your favorite song.

Running Man

Directions

  • Use the video on the right to learn how to do the Running Man.
  • Which of the four grooves do you see/feel in this move?
  • Play some of your favorite music and practice the Running Man.

Tip: It can be a challenge to pull the standing leg back in a slide motion as the other leg comes down in front. But with practice you can do it !!

Chicken/Monastery

Directions

  • Follow along with the videos to the right and learn the Chicken/Monastery.
  • Top Video - Chicken
  • Bottom Video - Monastery
  • Which of the 4 grooves are in these social dances (Up, Down, Jump, Drop)?
  • Pick a new song and practice.

Camel Walk

Directions

  • Working with the video on the right side of the screen study and practice the Camel Walk.
  • Don’t forget to lean your torso forward.
  • Make sure one knee is always straight and one is bent.
  • Two steps forward one step behind.
  • Can you name the groove?
  • Try it to your music.

More: Groove/Social Dance Activities

Activity 1

  • Try putting the Kid ‘n Play, Running Man, Chicken/Monastery and Camel Walk together in whatever order you want.
  • Play around and feel the different grooves togethers.

Activity 2

  • Create your own social dance move. Social dance moves can be based off of anything like: characters, fashion, sayings or gestures, and so much more.

Activity 3

  • Watch this video and see if you can figure out how to do these social dances.

Directions

  • Reflect and answer the following questions.
  • Grab a pencil and something to write with, or record it on a recording device, or tell a family member.
  • How does learning social dances help in building a foundation for understanding the 4 grooves?
  • What is your favorite current social dance and which specific groove(s) is represented?�
  • Send both your written and video to your Hip Hop Teacher so they can see your progress!
