TAPP Site Visit Q and A - Planning Support

Promising Practices -

  • Ground everyone in the following – “What is the educational experience our unique schools and educators offer to AI/AN+ students each and every day? What is a day in the life of an AI/AN+ student in our school system that might drive authentic engagement or contribute to disengagement?”
  • Assemble the TAPP Site Team and begin planning early
  • The Project Director should work closely with the building leaders to plan the classroom observations, unless the TAPP Family Advocate has this relationship and authority with the principals.

Key Documents -

  • Site Visit Agenda
  • Email sample scripts (in the agenda)

Agenda Item #2 - Classroom Observations

  • Tweak the scripts and make sure teachers

are aware of the purpose. Be prepared to

answer the question - “What does this

have to do with observing our classrooms?”

As you watch this video, please journal on the following -

What are three takeaways you have from this video?

What are the dangers of being color-evasive in your own education practices?

In order to do educational equity work, we must name the elephant in the room: race. Achieving systemic equity requires mindfulness in centering race and identifying and addressing power and privilege. In our next activity, we will think about why naming race is important and the danger of ignoring it.

What tensions have come up for you since we last met?

Personal Tension:

Each practitioner routinely questions their own personal readiness to become the type of

professional who can successfully engage issues of race and racism in their life and

classroom practice.

Structural Tension:

Practitioners routinely question the power of the individual educator to counteract structural

or societal problems of racial and race–class inequality via the classroom.

Strategic Tension:

Practitioners routinely search for concrete, actionable steps they can take in their classrooms

and schools, questioning how abstract ideas of theories about racial inequality and difference

can help them.
