Pilot site-Heraklion central food market

The Heraklion Central Food Market (CFM) operates as a logistic center for gathering and distributing agricultural products all over Crete.

The CFM hosts 37 merchants operating their own businesses, primarily focused on the wholesale supply of food products to their clients (retail and food service businesses).

Current state-Logistics organization

  • Employees per business (on average): 1 driver, 2-3 employees responsible for storage of products and preparation of deliveries, 1-2 employees responsible for administration (communication with customers, receiving orders, invoicing, etc.)
  • Vehicles: Each merchant has their own vehicles for the delivery of food products to the customers (supermarkets, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.)-150 vehicles (of different size and characteristics) used in the CFM
  • Routes: vary from day to day, based on the delivery schedules agreed between each merchant and their clients. Ad-hoc deliveries also occur
  • To complete Evaluation T0, the definition of a representative vehicle and average route was necessary

Data collection on vehicles and routes

  • Category 2 has characteristics similar to the electric vehicle. Also, the electric vehicle is planned to cover some of the routes of these vehicles
  • Majority of vehicles belong to this category
  • Representative vehicle is defined based on Category 2

Representative vehicle and average route for Evaluation T0:

  • Representative vehicle: Gross Weight of 3 tn, payload of 1200 kg, Diesel fuel (Category 2)
  • Average route: 40 km, 2 times/day, 6 days/week, 5 destinations
  • Time spent on logistics for one route: 3.5 h (1 h driving time, 1.5 h loading and unloading, 1h spent on other logistic activities (delivery preparation, invoicing, etc.)
  • Quantity transported per route: 850 kg

  • Connectivity through ethernet, Wi-Fi and 4G/LTE
  • Energy app that allows access to consumption data, status of charger, locking of charger, etc.

Next steps in the pilot implementation

  • A driver for the electric vehicle will be hired by LDO Heraklion
  • Activation of the Point of Delivery that will be used to connect the charging station to the electricity grid
  • Development of an operation schedule for the use of the electric vehicle in collaboration with the stakeholders of the CFM
