SUNY GUIDANCE

  • Old Westbury (~21), along with other SUNY Colleges and Universities, received a list of UUP employees for their respective campus that must be changed from a Temp Appointment to a Term Appointment.

    • A Temp Appointment may be terminated at any time. Temporary appointments are ordinarily given only when service is to be part-time, voluntary or anticipated to last for one year or less, or when the initial appointment is made to a position vacated by a professional employee who is serving a probationary appointment, or when a position has been vacated by an employee on an approved leave.
    • A Term Appointment is for a specified period of not more than three years, which may be terminated earlier because of resignation, retirement or termination. Certain notification requirements apply prior to termination.

  • The Visiting Professor faculty series, such as Visiting Assistant Professor 10 month, Visiting Associate Professor 10 month, etc., should be appointed no more than two (2) years in these faculty job classifications (temporary).

  • Lecturers will receive a term appointment as in accordance and compliance with the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees, pertaining to the Appointment of Employees.

All lecturer positions will become term positions (1 year)

Present visiting professors (over 2 years) and lecturer positions are eligible for consideration to become tenure track positions.

Eligibility for tenure track positions are determined by Provost, Deans, Chairs, and funding availability to be determined by B&F.

All other positions are expected to become lecturer positions for at least the next academic year.

There will be no more temporary visiting professor positions beyond 3 years.
