The Art of Letter Writing

7 of 41

    • There were no postmen, mail services, emails, or texts.
    • Letters had to be delivered by travelers, taking days or weeks to arrive.

No Modern Delivery Services

8 of 41

    • Writing materials were basic and writing was slow.
    • Letters were usually written on papyrus scrolls.
    • Most letters were dictated to a trained scribe.

Writing Was Hard Work

9 of 41

    • Sometimes Paul would write the final greeting himself.
    • Example: “I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write” (2 Thess 3:17).

Galatia in Paul’s time was located in what is now central Turkey.

It included towns like:

    • Antioch in Pisidia → near today’s Yalvaç, Turkey
    • Iconium → modern Konya, Turkey
    • Lystra → near Hatunsaray, Turkey
    • Derbe → likely near modern Karaman, Turkey

    • After Paul left, Jewish Christians (called Judaizers) arrived.
    • They insisted Gentile believers must be circumcised and follow Jewish customs to be truly accepted.
    • This cast doubt on Paul’s teachings and confused the believers.

The Problem

16 of 41

    • Some believers started getting circumcised, others hesitated—they all needed reassurance.
    • Paul never taught these extra requirements.
    • Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians to correct the confusion and defend the true message.

Why Paul Wrote the Letter

17 of 41

    • The letter was likely written around 48 AD, one of Paul’s earliest letters.
    • Addressed “to the churches in Galatia” — several churches, not just one.
    • Probably written after Paul’s first missionary journey and before the Jerusalem Conference because it deals with similar issues.

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

6

For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
