So what is plastic pollution?

  • Plastic pollution is the build-up of plastic in the environment.
  • The production of plastic increases faster than the pace of it being recycled.
  • Large production of plastic started 60 years ago.
  • Around 1950 there had been 2 million metric tons of plastic production.
  • In today's day, there are about 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic that have been made.

Single use plastic

  • 80% of the waste products are made of plastic. About 50% out of 300 million tons of plastic is single-use plastic.
  • Around 40% of single-use plastic isn’t recycled.
  • This is because single-use plastic is small objects that tend to fall within the recycling machinery, it's often not accepted with recycling centers.

Microplastic

  • Plastic has a bad effect on the ocean because it doesn’t break down, it breaks up into small pieces called microplastic.
  • Microplastic is pieces of plastic that are tinier than 5 millimeters, it can be smaller and be seen under a microscope.
  • Microplastic is so tiny because the sun heats the plastic slowly and makes plastic very small

Tips to reduce the number of plastic consumptions

  • Use a reusable produce bag
  • Be more mindful of the amount of plastic used in one day.

    • Disposable utensils
    • Beverage containers

    • Plastic drinking bottles,

  • Won’t be doing any clean-ups this spring but during the fall they are available.

  • Love your park has lost of events coming up. There are different types to if you’re interested.

Trash hero world

  • In this organization you have volunteers but not in Philadelphia like the last two. You can still donate, this organizations focus on just simply picking up the trash instead of leaving it there to rot.
