Move & Rotate Parts in FreeCAD

2 of 6

Steps to be able to move/rotate object

  • Use the Draft Workbench (2:34)
  • When you have a 3D object…
    • If you rotate that now with the mouse, you’re only rotating the view, not the object itself. To rotate the object...
  • Put in plane by pressing 1-6 keys (each is a different view) (4:00)
    • Need to be in a single plane so that you know where you’re rotating it
  • Select “Auto” (Set/unset a working plane)
  • Select “View” (4:50)
        • Now able to rotate and move in that plane without a weird result.
    • 2 buttons to use then are...

Moving Object

    • Button to use...

Move

    • Click Move/Rotate button, click (without holding) on object(s), and then click the location you want to move it to (sometimes slow to respond… so be patient)
    • If accidentally get out of the plane (5:55), hit “close” and then get back to the plane you started with (by hitting 1-6).
    • After moving object, you can check that it moved it correctly by rotating the view (e.g., clicking and dragging the window) (6:20). Then return to the correct plane before moving again.
    • When clicking these, if “Copy” is checked, it will create copy of object

When experimenting with this, you’ll see why the plane matters. It’s moving/rotating the object in 2-dimensional space within the plane you’ve selected. You’ll see that if you want to move/rotate it differently, you need to start in a different plane.

Rotate object

  • Click object(s) to rotate
  • Click rotate button
  • Set handle to rotate around by clicking somewhere on object, then moving off object and clicking to create handle, then move mouse to rotate object (6:30)

Checking the results

  • You can then rotate the view (click somewhere on screen, hold, and drag view) to see what your move/rotation did in 3 dimensions.
    • If you accidentally zoom out too much and can’t see the objects, select View, Standard views, Fit all
  • When done rotating the view, if you want to do another Move/Rotation, again select a working plane with the Auto button, or it may instead be showing coordinates
    • Select it, and then select View and continue with the same instructions as before.

Troubleshooting

  • If you try to move or rotate an object and it doesn’t work, look to see if there’s an error message
    • On a Mac, this shows up on the bottom left of the screen. Try googling it…
  • Read-only
    • Solution: Create a clone of the pad (3D object) you’re trying to move/rotate
      • Select the object to clone, then select Draft > Clone
      • You should then see something like this in your model tree on the left
        • Move/Rotate should work on that one
        • You can make the read-only pad invisible
          • Click on it in model tree, then hit spacebar
